In June, The Fisherman’s Mike Caruso joined Capt. Jimmy “The Greek” Koutalakis, and Chris Gatley and Fred Radcliff of PENN, Berkley and Abu Garcia aboard On Time Charters out of Cape Cod, MA. Their mission was to test the newest colors by Berkley Gulp. The “land of giants” produced a whole bunch of good fish in the 6- to 8-pound class along with a near 14-pounder that graced the cover of the July 2019 edition of The Fisherman. All were taken with some variance of the new colored Gulps, and all involved were ecstatic with the results. Hands down, the 5- and 6-inch Grub baits have been doormat killers season after season, which is where the latest colors come in to play.
After a crazy run of Salmon Red during the summer of 2018, Berkley set out to expand the color line, producing a full array of 5- and 6-inch Grub options for 2019 including Blue Fuse, Lime Tiger Glow, Cajun Chicken, Curry Chicken, Red Belly Shrimp, Camo, Fire Tiger, Orange Tiger, Clear Red Fleck, Orange Belly Shrimp, Sardine, and Mackerel. When word hit that new Gulp was on the way, folks clamored to be the first on the block to hit the grounds. After an initial delay in shipping to start the week of July 15 following the product unveiling at ICAST, the hot new colors began hitting shelves by end of the week with great fanfare.
As shops raced to keep up with demand, I got word about my friend Tom Gormley from South Jersey hitting the “land of the giants” with a package of Fire Tiger Gulp Grub for a couple of double-digit doormats to 11.4 pounds. They say all good things come to those who wait; suffice to say, the waiting is over!
