Reader Gallery: A Grand Slam Spring!

Growing up in Southern Ocean County at the Jersey Shore, the term “Barnegat Bay Grand Slam” was often used when someone caught a weakfish, striped bass, fluke and bluefish in the same trip.  What I’ve come to realize of course is that this particular method of hitting for the cycle transcends the Barnegat Bay – it’s essentially a Jersey Shore Inshore Slam!

Father’s Day is fast-approaching; I fondly recall one such day with dad drifting along Grassy Channel in Great Bay casting bucktails and pink Zooms on jigheads for weakfish where we turned up just one fish (weakfish actually) of the slam.  With three weeks to go before this Father’s Day weekend, keep in mind that the Jersey Shore Inshore Slam possibilities are alive, as each of these unique inshore species is on the prowl on local waters.  By adjusting your tactics slightly – by boat or by beach – it’s primetime for a grand slam!

We called him the “Weakfish Whisperer” in our May 11th video fishing forecast, but after catching 18 good weakfish to 7 pounds in South Jersey Frank Ruscynski wasn’t keeping silent any longer!

Fourteen-year-old Maren Schneider said the racer blues invaded the Manasquan River in early May providing outstanding action for the entire Schneider family, one-quarter of the way to the inshore slam.

“My boys Benny and Alex with their first keeper flounder of the year, 17 and 19 inches in Great Bay,” said proud dad Steve Urbano. We expect to hear more from the Urbano boys on the Father’s Day action ahead.

The outstanding spring striper bite in our region has brought anglers from far and wide, including Jami Price of Wareham, MA at Cape Cod who caught this 40-inch striper in the Jersey surf in May on a Yo-Zuri twitch bait.
