Growing up in Southern Ocean County at the Jersey Shore, the term “Barnegat Bay Grand Slam” was often used when someone caught a weakfish, striped bass, fluke and bluefish in the same trip. What I’ve come to realize of course is that this particular method of hitting for the cycle transcends the Barnegat Bay – it’s essentially a Jersey Shore Inshore Slam!
Father’s Day is fast-approaching; I fondly recall one such day with dad drifting along Grassy Channel in Great Bay casting bucktails and pink Zooms on jigheads for weakfish where we turned up just one fish (weakfish actually) of the slam. With three weeks to go before this Father’s Day weekend, keep in mind that the Jersey Shore Inshore Slam possibilities are alive, as each of these unique inshore species is on the prowl on local waters. By adjusting your tactics slightly – by boat or by beach – it’s primetime for a grand slam!
