A total of 68 boats competed in the 43rd annual Sandy Hook Bay Anglers two-day fluke tournament in July, with a pair of doormat fluke appearing in the final leaderboard.
Mike Ramirez of Matawan (photo) and his team took first place at $3,000 for a 29-1/2-inch fluke weighing in at an impressive 11 pounds. Newton’s Kevin Cole took second place and a $1,000 for his 29-1/2-inch, 11 pound doormat fluke.

Rounding out the top six finishers, it was Hightstown’s Tom Licknack in third (6.9 pounds), Beth Golden of Middletown in fourth (6.6 pounds), Daryl Peregrin from Bushkill, PA in fifth (6.4 pounds) and Ryan Belusko of Coplay, PA in sixth (5.6 pounds).
Beth Golden also won the ladies prize and Kevin Cole won the Saturday largest fish. For the first time ever the Sandy Hook Bay Anglers also added a junior prize this season, with Edward Golden going home with a rod and reel combo for his 2.1-pound fluke.
