After COVID-19 brought a call for special family trips where adults and children could enjoy fishing in a safe and socially-distanced environment in 2020, Capt. Greg and the crew of the Black Hawk decided to bring them back for Saturday afternoons through the end of August, and perhaps into September. “These trips will be shorter with a limited number of people and exclusively for family fishing,” said Heather, office manager for Black Hawk Party Boat Fishing. By ‘family fishing’ she means that every adult must be accompanied by a child or children and the trips will be shorter and more local, leaving the dock at 1 p.m. and returning between 6 and 6:30. “The rates will reflect the shorter duration,” added Heather, “and there will be package deals to accommodate different family configurations, two kids one adult, two kids two adults, three kids one adult…. etc.”
In addition to the great fishing for porgies and sea bass, with a chance at some bluefish and stripers, there will be opportunities to see some of the local wildlife. “Last year’s trips saw lots of seals, osprey, other shorebirds and blitzing fish!” Heather told me. The waters of Long Island Sound have a lot to offer! Capt. Greg and his crew are great with kids and take special pleasure in making sure children have a great time, catch plenty of fish and find a love for the great sport of fishing. They have donated many trips to scout groups, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and other children’s programs, “Those trips are always some of our favorites of the season,” Heather beamed, “I think we get more out of those trips than even the kids do! You know it was a great day when everyone walks off the boat smiling!”
So set aside a Saturday afternoon this month, gather up those kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews head on down to Niantic and take a ride with the Black Hawk, it’s sure to be one of the most memorable days of the summer.
