The Huntington Anglers Club Celebrates 75 Years

Due to the developments in the boating industry during the war years, boat manufacturers were now able to make recreational boats from fiberglass. Introducing this new material in the 1940s made boats more affordable, durable, and low maintenance. It also helped to set up what was to become a boating industry explosion in the 1950s. In the 1960s, boating was cited as the nation’s top family sport.

With more time to play, a housing boom, the G.I. bill, affordable fiberglass boats, sixteen hundred miles of shoreline, Long Island Sound to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, one could argue that Long Island was the epicenter of a boating and fishing movement.

In 1948, a group of anglers got together and formed the Huntington Anglers Club. Their vision was to foster the sport of fishing, to teach and assist others, to provide and comment when necessary on the regulations affecting our sport, and to enjoy the friendship of other like-minded individuals. The club has never wavered from its original objectives.

Their meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the Huntington American Legion Post 360, 1 Mill Dam Road, Huntington, at 8:00 p.m. Throughout the year, they have monthly fishing derbies, interclub fishing contests, beachside picnics, a holiday party, and many other events. Awards are given in the categories of men, women, and children. See their website for more information or, better yet, be their guest at a meeting. They have guest speakers and raffles, and food is always served. All are welcome.

Become part of their history and join us in raising a glass as we toast our founding members and all those who followed in continuing to keep their vision alive as well. For more information, visit www.huntingtonanglers.com.
