Upcoming “Surfcasters Only” Events On LBI

As surfcasters dust off plug bags, check waders for leaks and generally gear up for the fall run, September is also a good time to set the tournament calendar for 2020.

This season on the beaches of Long Beach Island, the 66th annual LBI Surf Fishing Classic returns for nine weeks of action starting October 10 and running through December 13. The “Derby” as it’s still affectionately known by locals is a surfcasting only event with daily, weekly, segment, and overall cash prizes.

In 2020, with the striped bass regulations moving to a slot fish, there will be three $1,000 segment prizes, though out of respect to the big fish that have been registered for years and are now effectively protected through the 28- to 37.99-inch slot, there will not be a grand prize striped bass prize.  Instead, tournament organizers have added a little royal spice to the entries with cash prizes for the largest kingfish in the tournament.

Once again in 2020, the LBI Surf Fishing Classic will feature special daily cash prizes throughout the event, with cash awards also handed out to top bluefish and red drum.  Entry is $30 for adults, $15 or kids age 17 and younger.  Tournament registration and weigh-in at each of the three participating tackle shops on LBI, including Surf City Bait &Tackle at 317 Long Beach Blvd. in Surf City, Fisherman’s Headquarters at 280 W. 9th St. in Ship Bottom, and Jingles’ Bait & Tackle at 1214 Long Beach Blvd. in Beach Haven.  For more details visit LBISFC.com.

Also on October 10 on the beaches of Long Beach Township is the 3rd Annual American Angler Surf Fishing Tournament.  Over $5000 in retail fishing prizes expected to be awarded with fishing teams up to six anglers and individual anglers are welcome. Free 4×4 access and lunch with paid registration.

This tournament is limited in size, early registration is suggested: Team entry is $75, individual adults $25, and kids $15.  This one day surfcasters only event will be held from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.  For details contact Carl Hartman at 201-481-4390.
