THE “NEW CUT” AT OLD INLET

Super Storm Sandy delivered a lot of bad when it roared through our area a little more than two years ago. But with all of the bad, also came a little good.

PALMER RIVER, MA WHITE PERCH

He was nervous but polite as he attempted to stuff the bucket full of white perch into the bed of his beat-up truck.

SALMON RIVER, NY

The Salmon River is located in Oswego County in upstate New York and provides excellent late season fishing opportunities.

CHOLERA BANKS

Located 10 miles south of Jones Inlet, the Cholera Banks were famous a half-century ago for incredible codfishing.

LAUREL LAKE

As winter begins its strangle hold on Long Island, many anglers look to shows and the occasional offshore adventure in search of cod, pollock, and other wreck species. There is another viable option that will offer steady action, and a lot of fun on the freshwater side of Long Island – Laurel Lake.

MATINECOCK POINT

If you look at a chart of western Long Island Sound, it clearly reveals Matinecock Point as one of the most prominent points jutting into the Sound.

ROBERT MOSES BACKSIDE SURF

There are several miles of shoreline stretching from the Fire Island Lighthouse to the backside of Democrat Point, and most of it has the potential to produce fish at one time or another.

HOG NECK BAY

When anglers talk about fishing the Peconics, you hear locations like Robins Island, South Ferry, Jessups, Greenlawns and the Brickyard. These are all bonafide hot spots that produce a variety of species throughout the season.

THE RACE

By far the largest tidal entrance of eastern Long Island Sound, the Race is located northeast of Little Gull Island and southwest of Fishers Island in New York waters.

BARTLETT REEF

Located less than .5 nautical mile south of Pleasure Beach in Waterford, CT, and extremely hazardous in a dense fog, Bartlett Reef is a nearly 2-nm-long, tide-swept strip of boulders and ledge. It’s also a very fishy place. Several years ago, I had an amazing experience here.

PLUM GUT

Eastern Long Island Sound features three large and sometimes fearful tidal entrances: the Race, the Sluiceway and Plum Gut.

WEEKAPAUG BREACHAY

Weekapaug Breachway, located at the entrance to Winnapaug Pond in Westerly, RI, can be as busy of a spot to fish as it can be good.

QUOGUE CANAL, NY: EARLY WEAKS

Piped between the confines of Moriches and Shinnecock Bays, the Quogue Canal was once notorious for its exceptional early spring flounder run that began by mid/late February, and usually lasted until mid-April.
