Schoolie Stripers Reach Massachusetts
Schoolie stripers have made as far as the Cape Cod Canal and Martha’s Vineyard this week, while Narragansett Bay is producing some larger fish, some of them already taping out above the slot limit. If you want to target some heavier stripers, western Long Island Sound has fish to 25 pounds taking flutter spoons and mojos. Tog fishing continues to improve, we have news of fish up to 10.5 pounds this week. American shad numbers have exploded since our last report, in both the Connecticut and Merrimack Rivers. Freshwater guys are doing very well with big largemouth bass, tanker smallies and lots of stocked trout.

Cool water temperatures and April weather has gotten the saltwater season off to a slightly slow start. If I wanted to bend a rod this upcoming week, I would still take advantage of the red-hot trout fishing action. Lexington Reservoir, Crystal Lake in Newton, Silver Lake in Wilmington, Griswold Pond in Saugus, the Shawsheen and Ipswich River as well as Long Pond in Plymouth have all been giving up a good number of trout. Rough seas and strong currents put a damper on the early haddock season. As the moon tide wanes and the seas calm down the ground fishing should start to heat back up. There has been some very strong haddock fishing on Jeffrey’s Ledge and Platt’s Blank. Stellwagen Bank and some of the inshore humps in Massachusetts have enjoyed some decent haddock bites on the days when the weather has been favorable, as well. As far as the flounder fishing is concerned, as I look at my calendar, as much as we all want to put our time in and push the envelope, we still need 50-degree water temperature before we can expect to find good fishing. We need a week of warm sunny weather to help things along.

Captain Rich from Black Rose Fishing Charters told me the best part of the spring haddock fishing is that anglers aboard his boat get to use very light tackle and fish shallow water. The 2024 haddock fishery is now open with Buzzards Bay porgy fishing opening in early May. Captain Rich will be concentrating on the red- hot squid fishing sailing out of South Yarmouth on the Cape until the first week in May, or until the squid bite shuts off. Black Rose Fishing Charters has lots of options to offer their clients

Jackson from Belsans Bait and Tackle told me that fresh water, particularly trout fishing has been outstanding. Morton Pond and Long Pong in Plymouth have been extremely productive. Haddock season has started and the store has a good supply of gear and bait. The weather has been typical spring like and unsettled with rough seas. We had a few good days this week and the boats that fished for haddock did great. Stellwagen is always steady but Stone Ledge and other inside humps have also been productive. There were a few fishermen out trying their luck on flounder in Scituate Harbor but no one has reported good results yet. Water temperature was 46 degrees this weekend and needs to get closer to 50 for the bite to get serious. Belsans is open 7 days a week.

Martha from Surfland told me there have been a few reports of shad but further up the river on the freshwater side in North Andover where a freshwater license is required. There have been no reports from Rocks Village yet. She thinks it will be another week or two before some fresh sea run stripers move into the rivers. With big schools of alewives and shad in the Parker and Merrimack Rivers, it wont be long before the stripers find them. Surfland is now open seven days a week.
