In spite of the un-February-like weather we’ve seen for most of this month, safe ice is hanging on from western Mass north into the mountains. The pike fishing has been really good with many fat fish landed and a few personal bests as well, like the 16-pounder pictured above, iced by Gus Khang. Closer to the coast, skim ice has been a hindrance to open water fishing, but the bigger lakes are open, and trout and bass fishing has been productive for most anglers who have been out trying. Schools of herring entering the Housatonic River are adding a little shot of espresso to the striper bite, and with a warmup coming next week, we should see many fisheries transitioning into a more spring-like bite.
