Spring has been coming on strong, and where there was 30- to 40-inches of snow three weeks ago, we now see grass and even the shoots of early daffodils poking through. This transition has launched the hardcore ice fishermen into panic mode, as edges deteriorate and coastal ponds slowly disappear from their list of targets. Interior areas are still holding safe ice, but it’s wet and messy. Those braving the slop are still catching and, by most accounts, the action has been solid. Open water fishing is slowly coming back, although most coastal ponds are still slushed-over and unfishable, that will change in a hurry. Those hitting the rivers are finding trout in Connecticut and the holdover spots are putting out some stripers as well.
