While ice fishing remains the main focus for New England anglers, some open water opportunities are slowly returning for rod-and-reelers. The ice on coastal ponds has deteriorated to the point that they should be considered off limits. Interior lakes and ponds remain safe, sporting anywhere from 6- to 20-inches of ice. The bite seems to be following the weather; picking up as fronts approach and slowing down on the high-pressure days. Trout catches seem to be on the rise on MA and CT, but stocked ponds are closed in Rhody and largemouth bass action has been strong throughout the region.
