Container Shortage Impacting Fishing Gear

Waiting for that new rod and reel, perhaps another fresh spool of braid?  According to CNBC, businesses and consumers should brace for another shipping crisis as a virus outbreak in southern China in mid-June has disrupted port services and caused delivery delays which will undoubtedly affect the recreational fishing industry.

“The disruptions in Shenzhen and Guangzhou are absolutely massive,” Brian Glick, founder and CEO at supply chain integration platform Chain.io told CNBC last month, adding “Alone, they would have an unprecedented supply chain impact.”

According to the report, waiting times for vessels to berth at the Yantian International Container Terminal in Shenzhen have “skyrocketed” from an average waiting time of a few hours to 16 days.  The Chinese province of Guangdong has faced a sudden uptick in COVID-19 cases causing authorities to shut down districts and businesses to prevent the virus from spreading rapidly.

Guangdong is a major shipping hub which accounts for about 24 percent of China’s total exports and is home to the ports of Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the third largest and the fifth largest ports in the world respectively by container volume.  CNBC stated that as different parts of the world bounced back from the pandemic, it created a buying boom which led to containers falling critically short.

Whether or not recreational fishing tackle comes directly from the ports of Shenzhen and Guangzhou, tackle industry sources we’ve spoken to say the resulting high cost of containers globally will have an impact on prices and delivery dates of fishing gear.
