Long Island surfcasters will once again have two opportunities to compete this September and October with the return of the Fred Golofaro Surf Fishing Classics in Montauk and along the South Shore.
The Fred Golofaro Montauk Surf Fishing Classic is scheduled for September 25-27, with fishing beginning at noon Friday and concluding at noon Sunday. Sponsored by The Fisherman, Long Island State Parks and the Montauk Anglers Club, the event carries a $20 entry fee. Montauk Anglers Club will serve as tournament headquarters for weigh-ins and photo submissions. A late-registration deadline of 9 a.m. Saturday will also be available.
Striped bass will be judged by length through photo submissions using the tournament-issued ruler and tag, while bluefish will be judged by weight with a 5-pound minimum. This year, $1,000 will be awarded for both the longest striped bass and heaviest bluefish. The awards ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Montauk Point, with goody bags for the first 100 attendees and additional raffle prizes.
The Fred Golofaro South Shore Surf Fishing Classic follows October 23–25. Co-hosted by The Fisherman and Long Island State Parks and sponsored by Captree Bait & Tackle, the tournament runs from noon Friday through noon Sunday. Boundaries extend from the Jones Beach West End Two Jetty east to the Moriches Inlet east jetty.
The South Shore event also carries a $20 entry fee, with striped bass judged by length and bluefish by weight. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division. An awards ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Captree State Park, where the first 100 attendees will receive free tackle and additional raffle prizes will be awarded.
Both tournaments honor the legacy of longtime Fisherman editor Fred Golofaro while bringing the Long Island surfcasting community together for two weekends of competition and camaraderie.
