LIBBA Announces 2021 Fishing Contests

With the start of the 2021 fishing season, LIBBA has announced their surf fishing contests for members.  2021 will have some new features, as well as the return of all their established contests.

New for 2021 is the Larry Carlucci Memorial Fish of the Month Contest

In this contest prizes will be awarded to the surf fisherman who catches the largest fish of the species of the month.  This contest will run from May through September.  All fish for this monthly contest must be legal fish, as per NY State regulations, surf caught, and witnessed by another LIBBA member or at a tackle shop.

A prize for the largest fish, by weight, entered each month will be awarded as follows:

May – Bluefish

June – Striped Bass

July – Weakfish

August – Fluke

September – Albies

The annual Ken Karwick Memorial Contest begins April 15th and runs through December 15th.  Any striped bass, bluefish and weakfish caught during the season may be entered into this contest. This contest is also open to the children and grandchildren of LIBBA members.  So fish with the kids, and let them enter their catches.  There are separate prize categories for children and youth.

The long standing Montauk Derby and South Shore Derby will be held on the weekends concurrent with the NY State/LI Fisherman Montauk Classic (tentatively Sept 24-26) and South Shore Classic.  These dates are pending at this time.

LIBBA’s 2nd Annual Catch and Release Tournament will be held the weekend of June 4-6 at Robert Moses State Park (From the lighthouse west to the eastern side of Fire Island Inlet, including the bay side of the park.)  Prizes will be provided for the largest striped bass and bluefish entered in this contest.  All entries must be witnessed by another LIBBA member. Further details will be provided to LIBBA members in May.

LIBBA will also be hosting a Face Book family fun contest Labor Day weekend. Prizes will be awarded for the largest striped bass and bluefish, and also for the catch that gets the most “likes” on Face Book.  Join in the fun for the last weekend of the summer!

In conjunction with the Town of Babylon, LIBBA will be co-hosting the Babylon Autumn Fishing Tournament the weekend of October 29-31, held on the Babylon beaches from Sore Thumb to Gilgo Beach. This contest requires a separate entry with the Town of Babylon. Prizes for this contest are awarded by the Town of Babylon at the conclusion of the contest. LIBBA sponsors a beach pool for the largest fish caught in the tournament. You must be a LIBBA member to enter the beach pool.

Finally, LIBBA will be hosting a members only West End South Shore Fishing Contest the weekend of November 5-7, 2021. This is a western south shore contest with boundaries of the eastern edge of Tobay Beach to the eastern side of Rockaway inlet. The top 3 striped bass and top 3 bluefish will win gift cards from local tackle shops.

*All of the weekend contests are pending compliance with local, state and national pandemic responses.
