The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife is hosting a series of free, family-friendly fishing events this July designed specifically for beginners. Led by MassWildlife staff and volunteers from the Angler Education Program, these hands-on clinics provide participants with the foundational skills needed to enjoy the water, including how to set up a rod, tie essential knots, cast effectively, and identify various fish species. These sessions are open to all skill levels and ages, offering a supportive environment for those who have never picked up a fishing pole.
One of the major benefits of these clinics is that no fishing license is required for participants during the event hours. To make the sport as accessible as possible, MassWildlife provides limited fishing equipment and bait for those who do not have their own, though attendees are also welcome to bring their own gear. While pre-registration is encouraged to ensure enough supplies are available, it is optional unless otherwise noted for specific high-demand locations.
In addition to scheduled events, MassWildlife offers several ways for the community to get involved in the sport throughout the summer. Groups interested in trying fishing can borrow rods, reels, and tackle directly from the agency along with instructional handouts to use on their own time. For those who cannot attend an in-person class, the agency provides online tutorials and a specialized Saltwater Angler Education Program for those interested in coastal fishing, as well.
Experienced anglers who wish to share their passion for the outdoors are encouraged to join the program as volunteer fishing instructors. MassWildlife is also committed to ensuring these events are inclusive; reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities or language interpretation services can be arranged with advance notice. For more information on upcoming clinics, gear loans, or volunteering, residents can contact the Angler Education Coordinator, Jim Lagacy, at jim.lagacy@mass.gov.
