Trout action has been picking up in ponds and rivers across southern New England this week, in some of the inland and northern reaches of our coverage area, ice has been hampering rod and reel efforts—but is not yet safe in most areas. Popular areas to go for trout have been the Cape kettle ponds and the Farmington and Salmon rivers in Connecticut. Holdover striped bass action has been picking up with a vengeance, especially in the Housatonic River where some larger fish are now taking jigs on night tides. Bottom fishing for cod, sea bass and tog is still an option in Rhode Island, the x-factor has been the weather.
