Long Island, Metro NY - North Shore Fishing Reports

Mike at Fishing East Coast Bait and Tackle in Little Neck reports the striped bass fishing has slowed a bit but still very good with a lot smaller slot size and undersize fish dominating the catches. The big bass are moving east but anglers have no complaints with slot size bass. Poppers and Glider Baits have been red hot inside Little Neck and Manhasset Bay’s. Live spot and bunker chunks has also been the key. Fluke are scattered around with some quality keepers mixing in with loads of shorts. Hart Island has been the hot spot this week where Spro Bucktails tipped with Berkley Gulp or squid spearing combo are the way to go. Porgies have finally moved into the area and are happy to take your worm and clam baits. Capt. Pat Barrett of the Shamrock Charterboat in New Rochelle reports porgy fishing slowed up a bit for the time being, however, the Sunset Fluke trips has been excellent with a 150 short fluke on each Friday and Saturday evening with Friday evening seeing 7 keepers to 24 inches hit the deck, while Saturday evening saw 8 keepers to 24 inches going to the fillet table. Capt. Pat expresses that a solid population of fluke have moved into the area and strongly suggests joining the Shamrock and its crew for a tranquil Sunset Fluke trip for some fun fishing and a chance to put some quality fluke on ice. Nuno DeCosta Tyalure Professional Tackle & Gear in Rye, NY reports the bass fishing remains excellent as there are still plenty of fish in the area; however, it is relevant to alternate as needed to be successful as the stripers are being choosey from one tide to the next. For instance, on Thursday Nuno had 13 bass while live lining while some of his customers employed artificial baits on the same day and the same time for a big zilch. Then on Friday, Nuno’s brother started off well with live bait, but once the tide changed the bite changed over to the surface where poppers and Berkley Glider Baits were all that the stripers were chasing and hitting. Nuno suggests keeping an open mind and be ready to make the switch and you should do very well. Fluke have finally moved into the area with some nice keepers to 27 inches finding their way into the net. Bucktails tipped with Berkley Gulp or squid and spearing combos are getting the job done. Porgy fishing is slowly picking up in the Rye area, and Nuno feels with the current heatwave the beaches and piers will come alive with tasty porgies where worms and clams will catch plenty for the pails and coolers. On the offshore scene, tilefish are still a hot item at the Hudson Canyon while bluefin tuna has turned on along the New Jersey shore and off Long Island. Aboard the open boat the Rip Tide III in City Island Capt. Carl reports a very good week of porgy fishing with many big fish in the mix to 2 pounds. Along with the porgies were a bi-catch of fluke and slot size striped bass. The boat sails daily leaving the dock at 8 a.m.

Blaise from Duffy’s Bait and Tackle in Glenwood Landing reports that the striped bass fishing continues to be quite good with many more slot size bass mixed in with the under and oversized this week. The fish are still in the Harbor and out in the Sound from Execution Rock to the Sea Wall outside of the inlet. Trolling Mojo’s and umbrellas or dropping down Chartreuse colored flutter spoons have been the ticket on the artificial end, while live bait and bunker chunks takes care of the natural remedies. Fluke fishing has once again come alive this week for anglers working the Matinecock Point grounds. Spro Bucktails in white, glow and crazy chartreuse dressed with Berkley Gulp or squid and spearing combo will do well with flatties ranging from shorts to 26 inches. Porgies have finally moved into the area with plenty of good size scup filling out coolers. Worms, clams and squid do the trick with the scup. Some reports of weakfish are coming from inside the Harbor and by Morgan Park and Pryibil Beach.

On Cold Spring Charters in Cold Spring Harbor, Capt. Herb Hahn reports excellent fishing for striped bass with every trip seeing boat limits of slot size stripers along with safe releases of oversize and undersize bass. The method employed is live lining which is a specialty aboard Cold Spring Harbor Charters. If you want a shot at scoring with some big stripers, Capt. The guys at Campsite Sport Shop in Huntington reports the solid striped bass fishing continues. You can troll Mojo’s, bunker spoons or umbrellas with tubes and swim shads or you can send down flutter spoons, diamond jigs and Cripple Herring or toss poppers and swimmers for some exceptional action along the beaches of Target Rock and Caumsett or troll along the rips at the Triangle for first class fishing with fish to 35 pounds. High/low rigs baited with Berkley Gulp or Spro Bucktails tipped with Gulp or FishBites off the LIPA Stacks and Platform has been consistent with catches of fluke although you have to work pretty intensely for a keeper or two. Porgy fishing has been a charm at buoy 11 B and the Brush Pile on clam or bloodworm flavored FishBites. Please note that Campsite does not sell live or frozen bait.

Rob at Hi-Hook Bait and Tackle in Huntington reports loads of striped bass all over the place which includes the Triangle, Cold Spring Harbor, Caumsett, Target Rock, buoy 15 and the Brush Pile. Rob says just about anything put in front of the bass has been working, both artificial and natural baits. Fluke fishing has been okay although you must still deal with a lot of shorties. South of buoy 13, the LIPA Platform and the LIPA Stacks are all producing with a one to 20 ratio. Spro Bucktails tipped with Berkley Gulp or a squid spearing combo continues to produce well; however, if you want to up your chances at a few keepers, try stripping down a fresh sea robin or mackerel which are hard for the bigger fluke to resist. Porgies are large and are settled in the usual haunts with buoy 11 B, the Brush Pile and Marshall Field chock full of scup to 2-1/2 pounds. Worms, clams and squid are all being favored by the scup.

Capt. Mark DeJong of the Celtic Quest Fleet in Port Jefferson reports fantastic porgy fishing from Port Jefferson Porgy Town USA. Every trip sees full limits for anyone who wants them. Most of the scup are large to jumbos which adds to the action. I strongly suggest coming out now and load up on the jumbos while they stick around and before the summer scup move into the territory. Please note that the Celtic Quest will be sailing 3 trips on Father’s Day, sailing 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., `12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Be sure to make your reservation on the Celtic Quest website for any trip, but as soon as possible for Father’s Day as these trip books fast.

Matt of Port Tackle in Port Jefferson reports striped bass fishing remains solid although not as torrid as last week but still excellent. The fish are inside Port Jefferson Harbor, buoy 11 and buoy 9 with live bait producing best. Fluke fishing has been sporadic with one day being good and the next day a dud. Bucktails tipped with squid and spearing has been producing well as are Gulp Baits. Porgy fishing has been off the charts with the area around Rocky Point being fantastic. Worms and clams has been best.

Sue Flora of Miller Place Bait and Tackle reports that the striped bass fishing remains good with fish to 30 plus pounds hitting Mojo’s, umbrella rigs and flutter spoons in the artificial department while bunker chunks and live eels takes care of the natural baits. Fluke fishing remains tough with the passing of draggers this past week. Fortunately new schools of fluke hopefully larger will find their way among the shoals. In the meantime there are fluke at Flax Pond and inside Port Jefferson Harbor at the sand bar leading into Conscience Bay. Bucktails tipped with squid and spearing has been best. Porgy fishing has been excellent off Rocky Point, Cranes Neck and Old Field Point all on sandworms and clams. Remember that the kid’s porgy derby runs until the end of June. To enter is free for kids 4 to 18 years old and you must be signed up before you can go fishing and weigh in any porgy. The leader on the board so far is Luciano with a 1.7-pound porgy.

Capt. Brian of Captain Skippy Charters in Mount Sinai reports that the striped bass run continues to be excellent with more slot size fish hitting the deck this week. The bass are feeding on mass schools of sand eels. Capt. Skippy is once again collaborating with Gray Fish Tag, giving anglers the unique opportunity to catch, tag, name, and release over-slot striped bass all in the name of science. Porgy fishing is top notch right now, with drop and stick action and jumbo scup coming over the rails. There has been great action with fluke on the flats with some keeper sized fish in the mix. As an added bonus there are a ton of Atlantic mackerel around right now chasing rain bait near the mouths of the harbors. The Captain has been keeping a Sabiki rig pole ready for when they pop up. The crew from Ralphs Fishing Station in Mt. Sinai reports striped bass fishing remains strong near buoy 11 and buoy 9. Trolling Mojo’s and umbrella rigs have been effective, as are flutter spoons and diamond jigs. Live bait and bunker chunks has also been productive. Fluke fishing was very good until the draggers paid a visit to the shoals and wiped out what keepers anglers had a chance to catch. There’s still good fluking at Flax Pond on Spro Prime Bucktails tipped with a squid and spearing combo. Porgy fishing has been excellent at just about any rockpile with Cranes Neck and Old Field Point leading the way for consistency. Sandworms and clams has been best for the scup. There are some fluke and porgies coming from the pier out front.

Mark of Cow Harbor Bait and Tackle in Northport reports the striped bass fishing remains excellent with a wide spread of fish from the Triangle, buoy 15, Huntington Bay and from most of the beaches. Poppers, flutter spoons, trolling Mojo’s and tubes are all producing well, however live spot or mackerel is as close of a guarantee as you can get for an easy limit of slot size fish as well as many oversize fish. Fluke fishing has improved with more keepers in the shuffle with fish to 24 inches being reported from the local waters. Spro bucktails tipped with squid and spearing or Berkley Gulp are the ticket. Porgy fishing has been real good with a lot of big scup from buoy 11 B, the Brush Pile and Target Rock both from the beach and in 40 feet of water on worms and clams.

Capt. Stu of Northport Charters in Northport reports excellent striped bass fishing at the Triangle this week. One memorable trip this week was with Rick and his grandson Logan. Logan had his first striper of 36 inches weighing in at 20 pounds along with his first giant sea robin and a fluke. The fluke bite is slowly improving as water temperatures rise. Capt. Craig from WeGo Bait and Tackle in Southold reports striped bass fishing remains exceptional anywhere from the Plum Gut to the Race. Live bait produces round the clock while bucktails on 3x3 rigs has been best during the day bite. A few big bluefish are also mixing in. Inside the bay porgies are mixed size and plentiful for all to enjoy, with Jessup Neck, Greenport and Southold Bay all producing scup to 2 pounds on worms and clams. Weakfish are hitting high/low rigs baited with strips of fresh squid as well as diamond jigs and red tube teasers. Noyack Bay, Roses Grove and Nassau Point are all producing weakfish to 7 pounds. Bluefish have been spotty with the deep water in front of Jessup Neck producing best at the start of a moving tide. No reports of black sea bass in the Sound as of yet.

Capt. Paul Ripperger and Captain Rachel Jannace Johnson of the Tide Hustle in Greenport reports a good week of porgy fishing with a good showing of weakfish to add to the fun. Thursday’s striped bass/porgy combo saw a fast start with stripers with many slot and oversize fish to start the day. Then came the boat traffic which shut the doors on the action. Popular demand suggested the switch to porgies which saw fares enjoy excellent catches of scup to 2 pounds along with several weakfish. Saturday saw the boat chartered and just like Thursday, the day started with a hot bass bite with several bass hitting the box before boat traffic closed the door to the action. A switch to the Peconic Bay porgy grounds produced plenty of humpback jumbos and some fine weakfish catches. For as long as the striped bass fishing remains solid, Thursday’s are dedicated to a striped bass/porgy combo with a 7 a.m. departure. Reservations are a must. The Tide Hustle is sailing from Brick Cove Marina in Greenport every day, weather permitting starting at 7 a.m. and returning back to the dock between 2 and 2:30 p.m. The Tide Hustle is the newest addition of the East End open boat operation that is owned and operated by both Capt. Rachel and her husband Todd Johnson. Open boat trips are limited to 15 anglers with a 100 feet of rail space to roam in. Although walk Ons are welcome when the boat is not filled, a reservation is strongly suggested to guarantee your spot on the rail. Adam Wilson at North Country Gas Bait and Tackle in St. James reports Ed Sloup along with his friends Tony and Chris spent a day on a charter boat for a tough day of fluking. On a better note, Tim of Bank of America has been slamming the bass in 40 feet of water on diamond jigs. Adam recommends hitting the water early in the morning or at sunset for the best action with bass. Porgy fishing has been excellent as Jesse Dowdell and his two sons visited the Middle Grounds this week keeping their largest 30 porgies and a limit of striped bass. Now that is some good fishing.
