Chase The Season: The 2026 Dream Boat Fishing Challenge

Seven species, 70 leaderboard spots, and one Steiger Craft grand prize—the 2026 Dream Boat Fishing Challenge gets underway May 1st.

Every fishing season has its moments. The first spring blackfish that thumps a jig in chilly April water. A fluke drifting across a sandy edge in July. The unmistakable run of a big bluefish cutting through a late-summer tide. Those moments are what keep anglers coming back to the water year after year. For many fishermen, those experiences are reward enough. But for a dedicated group of anglers across the Northeast, the season carries an added element of competition.

Each year, subscribers to The Fisherman Magazine have the opportunity to take part in one of the region’s most unique and challenging fishing contests—the Dream Boat Fishing Challenge.

It’s a contest designed not around a single catch or weekend tournament, but around an entire season of fishing. Success requires time on the water, careful planning, and the ability to target a variety of species across different fisheries. When the season concludes, the angler who proves to be the best all-around competitor will walk away with an incredible grand prize and earn the title of Dream Boat champion.

The concept is simple. Beginning May 1 and continuing through November 30, anglers compete by entering their largest fish across seven eligible species. Throughout the season, the biggest catches are ranked on the contest leaderboard, with the top 10 fish in each category earning a position in the standings. That means there are 70 possible spots on the final scoreboard.

Landing a fish big enough to hold one of those positions already puts an angler in the running for prizes. But to reach the top of the leaderboard requires something more—a strategy that spans the entire season and the ability to capitalize on multiple fisheries as the year unfolds.

Fishing The Full Calendar

The Dream Boat Fishing Challenge rewards anglers who think beyond a single species or short window of opportunity. Spring blackfish opportunities may give way to early fluke fishing. Summer months bring porgies and sea bass into the mix, while bluefish and weakfish runs can shake up the leaderboard later in the season. Even the often-overlooked sea robin can become a key factor for competitors looking to secure points.

The anglers who consistently finish near the top of the standings understand this dynamic well. They study seasonal patterns, travel to productive waters, and stay committed throughout the entire seven-month stretch. In many ways, the contest reflects what Northeast fishing is all about—versatility and persistence.

A Growing Tradition

The Dream Boat Fishing Challenge has become a staple of The Fisherman Magazine’s subscriber community. Since the contest format was introduced in 2016, it has produced a list of dedicated anglers who rose to the top through months of hard work on the water.

Recent champions include:

2025 – Rashawn Williams

2024 – Kyle Krause

2023 – Bobby Cifarelli

2022 – Rob Carranzo

2021 – Henry Piacentino

2019 – Garret Weir

2018 – Sam Dibner

2017 – Dave Wissemann

2016 – Vincent Deledda

Each of these anglers approached the contest with a slightly different strategy, but they all shared one thing in common—a willingness to fish often, adapt quickly, and stay focused on the leaderboard throughout the season. By late fall, when the contest winds down, those efforts determine who will join this prestigious list of Dream Boat champions.

The Grand Prize

The centerpiece of the Dream Boat Fishing Challenge is a prize package built for serious Northeast anglers. The 2026 champion will take home a Steiger Craft 23-foot Chatham Center Console, powered by a Yamaha 250-horsepower outboard.

Steiger Craft boats have long been respected among Northeast fishermen for their rugged construction and fish-focused layouts. Designed to handle the varied conditions anglers encounter from back bays to offshore grounds, the 23 Chatham delivers a combination of stability, fishability, and durability that makes it a perfect platform for serious saltwater anglers.

The vessel comes equipped with a Humminbird XPLORE 10 CMSI+ fish finder, providing advanced sonar and navigation capabilities to help anglers locate bait, structure, and gamefish. The boat package also includes a Minn Kota Riptide Terrova Quest trolling motor, delivering up to 115 pounds of thrust with an 87-inch shaft, allowing anglers to hold position over wrecks, reefs, and to follow productive drifts with precision. The trolling motor will be powered by the 36v 60 Ah Solid State Battery we are including as well.

Adding another level of technology and security to the prize package is a Skyhawk Oversea Vessel Monitoring System Starter Bundle, which allows boat owners to remotely monitor their vessel while receiving alerts and tracking information designed to help protect and manage their investment.

Additionally, the grand prize comes equipped with SeaDek Marine Flooring, consisting of two colors of a 6mm custom cut flooring, installed by JSI. To cap it off for first place a Seakeeper Ride 450 will be included, this feature will be installed by Atlantic Stabilizers, giving this ride ultimate smoothness and stability!

Together, this collection of premium add-ons creates a fishing platform capable of handling everything from inshore wreck trips to exploring distant fishing grounds. And it will all go to the angler who proves themselves the most versatile fisherman of the 2026 season.

More Opportunities To Win

While the grand prize stands as the ultimate goal, the Dream Boat Fishing Challenge offers plenty of other rewards along the way.

The second-place finisher will receive an incredible fishing getaway with four nights and five days at the world-famous Tropic Star Lodge in Panama for up to two people. The trip includes accommodations and inshore fishing opportunities at one of the most iconic sportfishing destinations in the world. Airfare, transfers, licenses, meals, and other additional costs are not included, and the trip must be redeemed between March and May of 2027.

The third-place angler will receive a Sea Eagle FastTrack Angler 385FTA Fishing Rig Package, along with an Engel EN80 cooler—a combination that opens the door to exploring waters that might otherwise be unreachable.

Additional prizes will be awarded throughout the season as well; the largest fish entered in each species category will earn a Starbrite Ultimate Bucket Kit, Quantum Merit Spinning Reel 5000, and a Relentless 10-inch knife while the Fish of the Month winners will receive a Bull Bay Rod and Danco Fishing Pliers. At the conclusion of the contest, the 70 anglers holding positions on the final leaderboard will receive a spool of Yo-Zuri SuperFluoro 30yd 30lb and a spool of  Yo-Zuri SuperBraid 9 White 300yd 30lb prizes packages as finalists.

Eligible Species

For the 2026 Dream Boat Fishing Challenge, competitors will be targeting seven species common to Northeast waters:

Blackfish – 7 pounds

Bluefish – 10 pounds (New minimum weight)

Fluke – 7 pounds

Porgy/Scup – 2 pounds

Black Sea Bass – 3 pounds (New minimum weight)

Weakfish – 5 pounds

Sea Robin – 2 pounds

Each species presents different challenges, from structure-oriented blackfish to drifting fluke and the speed and power of bluefish. Competitors who succeed are typically those who understand when each species becomes most accessible and how to target them effectively.

The Season Ahead

As the 2026 fishing season approaches, anglers throughout the Northeast are already preparing tackle, studying tides, and planning their first trips of the year. For those looking to add a competitive edge to their fishing, the Dream Boat Fishing Challenge offers something unique—a chance to test your skills across an entire season of fishing while competing against some of the region’s most dedicated anglers. We suggest you read back on what the previous winners had to say about how they found their winning fish when they participated in past tournaments.
