Meet The Candidates: Democrat Mikie Sherrill

Democrat Mikie Sherrill is a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot.

“Why should New Jersey boaters and anglers vote for you on November 4th, and as governor of New Jersey, what is your pledge to the recreational fishing community?”

I grew up in a hunting family, my husband is an avid fisherman, and he has taught my kids to love it too. I know just how much having access to outdoor recreation can do for our communities. My family always comes home laughing, joking, and telling stories about their adventures fishing — it’s a welcome change from the seemingly endless time my kids spend scrolling through social media. And while they won’t admit it, my teenagers may even like spending time with their parents if they happen to be out fishing.

I want every kid and every family across the Garden State to have the opportunity to enjoy New Jersey’s outdoors and recreational spaces. And I want to make sure that our state’s natural resources are available to generations of New Jerseyans to come.

Here’s my pledge to you as governor:

I will work with the recreational fishing community as a partner and will give you a seat at the table when decisions are being made in Trenton. I’ll ensure that the Division of Fish and Wildlife has the resources and support it needs to manage and conserve game birds, fish, and animals to provide an adequate supply for recreational purposes for future generations to enjoy. And I’ll focus on reducing red tape and bureaucracy to make it faster and less expensive to get a fishing or boating license.

New Jersey’s boaters and anglers are feeling the pain of enormous utility cost hikes this summer, with prices rising by 20% for the average family. As governor, I will declare a State of Emergency on Utility Costs, under which I will stop the rate hikes so that the average family sees no increase in their rates over the next year. I’ll also massively increase power generation in our state, because more generation means lower prices. It’s time for action because people just can’t wait any longer.

As a mother of four, I’ve also seen firsthand how we are coming up short for our kids and where we can do better as a state. New Jersey’s kids need additional support now more than ever before, which includes everything from their mental health to their long-term academic success. As governor, I will invest in the health and wellness of our kids. That means providing high-impact tutoring to get kids back on track, establishing a new framework for keeping kids safe online and preventing the harms of social media, and providing better access to mental and physical healthcare for children in our schools.

Finally, I’ll lead a culture shift in Trenton and at our state agencies, requiring a new level of accountability and transparency on everything from your fishing or boating license wait time to accessible information about our state’s budget. I’ll make it easier and less expensive to start and grow a small business, and will reform New Jersey’s burdensome permitting process which will lower costs on everything from housing to utilities.

I’m running for governor to lower the costs that New Jersey families are facing and to make it easier to live and work in New Jersey. I would be honored for you to join me.
