Dream Boat contestants have something to look forward to for this season’s event. This year’s grand prize is the new Steiger Craft 23 DV Miami. Made for fishing, her hull design features a 19-degree aft deadrise running bottom that morphs into a sharper, wave-piercing deep-vee forefoot in the bow. It is sized to fit in between Steiger’s 21 and 255 Miami models, offering a trailerable package that is ready to tame rough coastal waters in your pursuit of inshore and near offshore gamefish. The cabin, helm and cockpit areas include recent upgrades like a new dash panel where owners can flush-mount a 12-inch multi-function display for their electronics; new and improved benches that are higher, with more volume underneath for storage and hinged lids; new Intra LED spreader lights; plus weatherproof starboard backing plates for all benches and upholstery to replace the old plywood sections.

My experiences running this 23-footer with its 8-1/2-foot beam on both inshore and offshore away charters have all been extremely favorable. The 23 Steiger DV Miami offers a generous amount of unobstructed fishing cockpit and performs well with a variety of different outboard powerplants. There’s plenty of protected area for captain and crew when the weather turns against you, plus a convenient cuddy cabin and porta-pottie for overnighting. It features a one level cockpit sole from the transom to the recessed cabin section for maximum visibility when underway. The Miami features a three-sided cabin layout with an open back that promotes airflow and more contact with the action in the cockpit when you want it.

The Steiger Craft 23 DV Miami offers a complete list of standard fishing and comfort features, with the option to totally customize it to meet your personal needs. Standard accoutrements on this 23-footer include an anchor locker in the bow; marine compass; 5-rod rocket launcher on the hardtop; auto aft and cabin bilge pumps; cabin hatch for natural light and ventilation; hydraulic steering; opening front windows and sliding side windows for maximum ventilation; port and starboard wipers; a roomy portside couch for three; captain’s pedestal chair; dual battery system; Porta-Pottie; recessed trim tabs; four gunwale mount rodholders; LED spreader lights; stainless steel bow rail; V-berth cushions and much more. Optional features include a bow pulpit with windlass, cockpit bolsters, choice of eight optional gelcoat colors, raw water washdown, additional rodholders, drop down transom bench and more.

The 2018 Dream Boat Fishing Challenge Grand Prize Dream Boat Steiger Craft ’23 is equipped with a state of the art Evinrude G2 ETEC 250hp outboard for which performance specs on the 23‘are not currently available. Factory performance-tests with a trio of Yamaha four-stroke outboards, included the in-line 2.8L four cylinder F200, plus the big-block V6 4.2L 250 and 300. Not surprisingly, all three performed well and give prospective owners some intriguing options. The F200 was able to hit a top speed of 43 mph at wide open throttle spinning a 15-inch pitch Reliance three-blade stainless steel prop, two people onboard and loaded with safety gear, 3/4 of a tank of fuel and one battery. Optimum fuel economy occurred in the 4000- to 4500-rpm range, where she cruised between 27 to 31.5 mph at roughly 3.4 mpg. While this is excellent fuel economy for a hefty 23-footer with a cuddy cabin, if you are going to load her up with family and friends for occasional trips to the beach or your favorite waterside eatery, you might want to consider going with a V6. The Yamaha F250 produced a top speed over 46 mph loaded with a 1/2 tank of fuel, with a faster 30-mph cruise at 4-grand at 10.5 gph, for a net of 2.86 mpg. Bumping the throttle up to 4500 rpms, she hit just shy of 34 mph on the GPS while drinking 12.7 gph, for a bottom line of 2.63 mpg. Going with her max rated 300 horsepower on the transom, the top speed is almost 52 mph with 1/2 tank of fuel, with optimum fuel economy at 3500 revs, where she will turn 28 mph at 9.4 gph, for 2.98 mpg. Advancing the throttle to 4000 rpm will hit 34.1 mph on the GPS at 11.8 gph, for a net of 2.89 mpg. No matter what engine option you prefer, the standard 124-gallon fuel tank will take you a long way between fill-ups.

The limited lifetime hull warranty on all Steiger Craft boats is a bonus and the fact that they will custom tailor the 23 DV Miami to your individual needs is yet another plus.
