Autumn on Martha’s Vineyard brings cool coastal breezes, blitzing schools of hard-fighting fish, and one of the most storied traditions in American angling.
Returning for its 81st year, the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby is set to kick off on Sunday, September 13, running five action-packed weeks through October 17. Since its inception in 1946, “The Derby” has grown into an iconic fall ritual, bringing together generations of local fishermen and visiting anglers to celebrate sportsmanship, coastal conservation, and island community spirit.
Anglers will take to the island’s beaches and open waters competing across boat, shore, fly rod, and all-tackle divisions, tailored for everyone from Mini-Juniors and Juniors to Seniors. Competitors will be hunting down three eligible species: bluefish, bonito, and false albacore. Though the historic event retains “striped bass” in its name, stripers have intentionally not been eligible for tournament weigh-ins for many years in order to support conservation efforts and stock rebuilding.
While the camaraderie and tradition are reason enough to fish the Derby, the prestige of placing in any category or pulling off a win is something that anglers carry for a lifetime. This year’s Grand Prize, courtesy of Vineyard Vines, is a custom 2026 Jeep Gladiator Mojave X wrapped in a striking “Vineyard Slam” camo print. Anglers will also have additional incentive to hit the water during “Super Saturday” events throughout the month, where cash prizes will be awarded on three Saturdays for the heaviest shore and boat fish of each species brought to the scales.
Families can also look forward to the annual Kids Day on Sunday, September 20, from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. at the Oak Bluffs Steamship Wharf, offering a completely free morning of fishing fun for young anglers aged 4 to 14.
Getting in on the action is easy, anglers can register online by visiting the official tournament website at mvderby.com. Registrations and official derby rulebooks are also available in person at local Martha’s Vineyard tackle shops. Registration fees cover entry for the entire five-week competition, while the Kids Day remains entirely free of charge. Throughout the tournament, daily weigh-ins will take place at the historic Edgartown Junior Yacht Club weigh station.
