The New York Coalition for Recreational Fishing (NYCRF) is encouraging anglers to support a petition calling for expanded fishing access at Heckscher State Park on Long Island’s South Shore. While nine Long Island State Parks currently allow overnight parking for night fishing, Heckscher is not among them, despite offering nearly 3.5 miles of accessible waterfront.
According to NYCRF, allowing night fishing access at Heckscher could provide additional opportunities for anglers, particularly when other South Shore beaches are temporarily closed due to erosion or piping plover protections. The organization notes that the park already operates overnight camping and maintains security during those hours.
NYCRF is requesting that New York State Parks consider implementing a trial night fishing program at Heckscher State Park to evaluate the potential benefits for the recreational fishing community.
