NJ Grouper, King Mackerel, Squid & More Striper News

The first weekly fishing report of August and we practically hit the “grand slam” of Jersey Shore exotics in the opening 3-1/2 minutes. From back bay grouper and hammerheads, to record-breaking king mackerel and jumbo cobia off the beach, the midsummer action in the region is really heating up. This week’s report is from Avalon Hodge Podge in Cape May County as we bid bon voyage to Dave and Tammie Carbohn after 25 years of serving this Avalon boating and fishing community. Fluke are setting up on the structure and in deeper waters, though a few can still be found out back, with a 13-pound doormat tops this week at the Jersey Shore and in our Dream Boat Fishing Challenge. Tips on working the sticky stuff, a look at inshore tautog and sheepshead, as well as triggerfish and open beach options in the weekend ahead. Plus the squid have been thick along some of our midrange grounds, while ASMFC takes another vote on the “squid hounds” this week to continue the emergency regulations.
