13 Days ‘Til NJ Stripers & Whale #9 At Manasquan

By the numbers alone we’ve got a lot going on this week. To start there are three shows in the region being staffed by The Fisherman with “how to” fishing seminars, including the New Jersey Boat Sale and Expo in Edison, the Philadelphia Fishing Show in Oaks, PA and Surf Day out at Lincroft. Freshwater, saltwater, surf, inshore and off, if it swims then it’s pretty much covered at one of these local events this weekend. In our reports this week it’s mostly white perch along with a few cod and blackfish in the salt, while open water freshwater options abound. The big news in our report this week is the 9th dead whale in the NY/NJ region since December washed up along the beach at Manasquan this week. We’ve got video from the scene, with a quote from NOAA Fisheries (“no evidence”) and an interview with Clean Ocean Action (“need more research”) about the potential causes of these “unusual whale mortality events” and any possible impact from “vessel-based site assessment surveys using high-resolution geophysicalequipment” (NOAA’s words, not ours.)
