Bluefin Bending Rods on NJ’s Nearshore Grounds
Bigeye and yellowfin are making their presence felt on the offshore grounds this week; in fact a monster 290-pound bigeye was weighed in by team Riptide in the Quest for the Ring AC offshore event on Wednesday, as was a 70-pound white marlin for NBA legend Michael Jordan’s Catch 23 (a fish initially reported as a whopping 120 pounds). While the South Jersey canyon grounds are heating up, along the Central and North Jersey coast it’s all about bent bluefin rods closer to shore, with tuna popping up anywhere from 5 to 20 miles out. Grab the wide trackers and jigging gear this week to load up on the “unders” (and possibly an “over” in the mix as well) while the action is good. This week’s report from Creekside Outfitters in Waretown highlights a true doormat from Barnegat Bay, while running down the surf options in Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic and Monmouth County for the weekend ahead.
