Fluke Season Opens This Saturday & Bluefish Invade the South Shore
The big news coming this week is the opener for the ’24 fluke season. Remember, new regulations are in effect. Those going out in search of some early-season flatties should be well aware of them. Porgy season also opened earlier this week, with reports of them being caught already. Bluefish have been making their presence known on the South Shore of the island, harassing bunker schools throughout the bays. Stripers have been on both shores and have made their way to Montauk as well. For those who were curious, the last days of the tog season were productive for those who tried for them with catches into the double digits. As a last reminder, recreational tuna fish for giant bluefin (73 inches or larger) also closes until the end of the year with the reaching of the subquota.
The big news of the week was the arrival of the bluefish along the South Shore back bays! They’re not in fully but some of these racer fish were confirmed in the Fire Island area, Great South Bay and the Narrows. Striper fishing along the open beach stretches from Fire Island all the way out to Montauk lit up during the week. Moses, Great Gun, and all of the cuts in the Hamptons saw good shots of fish. The North Shore, from its western end to Wading River had some solid shots of stripers as well. Shorebound tog fishing on the north side of the island also saw a solid week before its closing this week.

Up on the western North Shore, Blaise from Duffy’s Bait & Tackle in Glenwood Landing reported a good closing week to the shore tog season up in the Hempstead area. The jetty produced fish to about 5 pounds on clam and green crabs. Inside the harbor he said that the striper bite was still solid but bait was still the number one option over the lures. If you could snag a bunker or toss out a fresh chunk that was like candy for the bass. Clam and sandworms had their fair share of striper as well.
