Fire Island Striper Bite Continues & Opening Week of Fluke Reports
The opening week of fluke did not disappoint a lot of those who tried for them. We got reports of solid catches in the western South Shore bays and a rumor of a 14-pounder caught centrally in a South Shore Bay! Montauk saw a pick of keepers despite the cold water temperatures. The striper bite along the South Shore bays continued throughout the week, with solid reports from Jamaica through Fire Island, the Great South Bay, and even out to Shinnecock. Montauk also saw its first sizable wave of stripers to about 36 inches. Bluefish were mixed in with the stripers in most locations along the South Shore. Good reports of porgy fishing are starting to emerge from Peconic Bay as well.
Continued surf success has been coming from the sand beaches from Cedar in the central island area all the way out to the Hampton beaches. Dock fishing inside the Great South Bay has seen a mix of stripers, bluefish and weakfish. Shorebound porgy reports are starting to come from the North Shore of the island and inside Peconic Bay as well. The Peconics are beginning to see better weakfish reports and continued striper reports as well.

Bob from Bob’s Bait and Tackle let me know is Cedar is still seeing that pick of bluefish and a solid wave of stripers coming by. Bob still said that if you can get fresh bunker, that’s the best way to connect with them. The Amityville docks are also seeing a good chunk bite on the stripers but early morning plugging with topwater plugs like Yo-Zuris and Super Strikes are getting fish to rise as well. He knew of a few weakfish caught at the Drawbridge during the week on soft plastics.

Brenden from Captree Bait and Tackle checked in saying they’ve been getting weakfish weighed in at the shop up to 5 pounds over the weekend from the dock by the store. Bluefish to 6 pounds have also been caught at the pier but they did know of some larger ones on the sand beach by Cedar. Fluking has also been hot at the docks and shorelines inside the Fire Island Inlet. The police dock being another hot spot to take a look at. Bouncing a bucktail tipped with a spearing or Gulp Swimming Mullet has been the easier way to connect.

Pablo from J&J Sports in Patchogue reported that the bluefish moved into the Patchogue Dock area with force. Fresh bunker was the best method to getting their interest but a big Super Strike or Yo-Zuri popper worked in the early morning has been getting plenty of strikes as well. Some stripers have moved into the river by the dock and those using those chunks again have found success in doing so. Smith Point Bridge also had a nice batch of stripers hanging out in its lights after dark to about 33 inches.

Mike at Saltwaters Bait and Tackle in West Islip let me know Cedar Beach has been a great location despite the crowds. Stripers and bluefish have been steady targets. Bunker chunks have been best for both but he did know clams were catching their fair share of bass as well. Tins and bucktails worked along the surf have accounted for both as well. He knew of some weakfish caught inside the bay at the bridge on soft plastics.

Carmine from Campsite Sport Shop told me head heard of a hatch this week inside of Cold Spring Harbor and the stripers were on them. Small profiles is what he recommended. The casters using teasers and fly rods were the ones seeing the best results. On the Sound beaches, Sunken Meadow and Crab Meadow areas saw fish into the slot size and above to about 34 inches.
