Long Island, Metro NY - South Shore Fishing Reports
Solid Sea Bassing - Fluking Continues To Improve
We know plenty of fishing will be taking place during the extended weekend coming up and there’s plenty of fish around to be caught. Both the South Shore bays and Montauk are seeing an improvement in the fluke bite while the sea bass season opener started off well with good catches around the island. Montauk remains hot for stripers once again going into this weekend with more fish over 50 pounds reported. Contributors also check in this week with the best options heading into the holiday. Whether you’re heading out on the water this weekend or watching fireworks at home, enjoy the holiday and stay safe.
Starting out in Moriches, its a captains choice as there is a ton of bass and fluke roaming the bay. If you want bass, the back bay, and inlet area is holding keeper size fish. Live spot has been the meal ticket. For fluke I heard buoy 24, Seatuck Cove and the West Cut have all produced keepers, with fish to 5 pounds. Moving west towards Great South Bay and anglers have a wide option with blowfish and kingfish showing on the bottom, fluke roaming the bay with blues, while striper action is good, especially after dark on live eels. And, if you want to head outside the inlet, larger fluke can be had towards the west, while threshers are raiding bunker schools at the 50-foot depths.

Jay at Silly Lily Fishing Station in East Moriches said there are a lot of bass in the Elbow, with clam and clam chum working well. In the West Cut, the fluke bite is good with Uncle Josh rind on the back of a bucktail. Spearing and squid is also working well. Jay said this is the best spring action he has seen since taking over the station. Even novice anglers are scoring well on bass and fluke. Come on down, the weather is great and the fishing is hot. John at J&J Sports in Patchogue said kingfish and blowfish have moved in thick on the local docks. Fishing small hooks like bait holders, tipped with a piece of fresh clam, you will see the best results. These fish are fun to catch on light tackle, but they also make for a fresh, tasteful dinner as well. On the incoming tides around Moriches Inlet we are seeing some quality fish coming over the rails. From nice keeper fluke to slot size bass in the back of the inlet. There is even some nice bluefish cruising around. The guys from the shop were out one morning this week and had a mixed bag of fish. They even had keeper porgies while drifting for fluke. Sea bass fishing has been red hot across the island. Wrecks, artificial reefs, rocks or any kind of structure has produced. Fishing clams on the bottom and you can be sure these knuckle heads will hit your rigs. Porgies have now moved in on the south shore. These fish can now be caught on both sides of the island with strong reports still coming in from many popular north shore spots such as Cedar Beach and Wildwood State Park. On the south shore the Shinnecock Inlet has produced good quantities of fish. To catch porgies all you need is a simple high low rig with a piece of clam or sandworm. Fluke remains hot around Long Island with large amounts of fish being caught around Smiths Point Bridge as well as the Morichess Narrow Bay and Shinnecock bays. Fish up to 10 pounds have been reported in Moriches as well as Shinnecock. More

From Frank at Chasing Tails Bait and Tackle in Oakdale we heard that summer is officially here and bottom fishing is the name of the game! Sea bass, fluke, and porgy are all out and about and plentiful! Sea bass action on the local wrecks and reefs is lights-out! Many anglers are pulling up 3 pound fish, and there are some twice that size in the mix. Clams on hi-lo rigs are classic and always work, you can also use big bucktails and jigs to get down there to them. Fluke have moved into the bay and set up in their usual summer spots. They're picky, loving the brighter colors and smaller presentations. Bucktail rigs are a shop favorite. Local anglers are reporting plenty of shorts of course, and their keepers are all over 20 inches which is fantastic. Porgy are ripping up the local inlets and all the structure possible, snatching clam off of any rig they can find. Jigging is also getting popular for porgy, and it's a lot of fun. Stripers are still around, chasing bunker, sand eels, and spearing all over the flats. Entice their bite with a popper or walking bait. Fly guys are crushing it on small baitfish presentations and topwater as well. Off the beaches they are smashing bottle plugs, darters, bucktails and poppers. Blues are running the inlet, smashing baits and lures like they're supposed to. Weakfish are running the tides during the very early mornings and in the evenings. Light tackle is the key to success for this species. Finesse is key one they are hooked. They love bright colors like pink, chartreuse, and white. More

At Saltwaters Bait and Tackle in West Islip I heard there are plenty of blues roaming the bay, with tins and topwater poppers ruling the action. On the fluke front, it appears the best action is up near the inlet with Gulp, spearing and squid working best. Stripers are a bit quiet, with the best action way to the east towards Moriches and all the way to Montauk. On the ocean pieces and rough bottom, the sea bass action remained good, with the occasional fluke coming up too. More

Stephan of Ocean Vue Charters reported tuna fishing slowed down offshore, with the bite moving closer to NJ and farther out to the eastern canyons. The boat did however run an overnight trip all over the Hudson which produced about 300 pounds of tilefish to 35 pounds. Anglers arms were a bit weary after this trip. On the down side, they broke off a 300 pound or so bluefin after a 2 hour fight. The boat has open dates for offshore trips in August and some of July, please check their website (http://ocean-vue.net/) for pricing and contact with any questions! More
