Nuno DeCosta Tyalure Professional Tackle & Gear in Rye, NY reports that bass fishing remains off the charts with many fish to 43 inches. Trolling, jigging and live bait all have been producing well. The fluke have moved into the area and surprisingly there are many keepers with many shorts with fish to 8 pounds hitting bucktails tipped with Gulp or spearing and squid combo. Porgy fishing has been spotty; however, once you locate a school of scup, anchor and chum and you should hold the fish to the boat for as long as the chum holds out. On the offshore scene, bluefin tuna season is now open, which allows you 2 tuna per trip. Tile fishing has been excellent at the Hudson Canyon with plenty of golden tile and blue line tile fish with fish to 35 pounds. Whether trolling for tuna, marlin or swordfish or jigging for tuna or sending down the right baits and rigs for tilefish, Tyalure is fully stocked with offshore gear, bait and chum to handle anything needed for the task offshore and inshore. Without a doubt, Tyalure is your one stop shop for all your fishing supplies as well as clothing to deal with the elements Mother Nature throws at you. Nuno suggests stocking up on tuna bait and gear while everything is in stock. The store is open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Capt. Brian of Captain Skippy Charters in Mount Sinai is happy to report that the striped bass spring run is in full swing. After a slow start from the cold winter, water temps are finally creeping up to the magic 60 degree mark. Trips have been having great action catching bass to over 25 pounds by trolling, jigging, and with live bait. They are once again collaborating with Gray Fish Tag, giving anglers the unique opportunity to catch, tag, name, and release over-slot striped bass all in the name of science. This week’s shout out goes to James who released a 40 inch striper named “Jalen Bronzino” in honor of the Knicks playoff run. This week brought an influx of big porgies into the Sound resulting in the drop and stick scup fishing that we have been waiting for. Despite sand eels being everywhere on the flats, fluke fishing remains on the slower side. With a tremendous amount of bait in the water, it is only a matter of time until the fluke bite picks up. After such a brutal winter there’s no better time than now to get your family back out on the water. Call (631) 252-6536 to book a trip.

Capt. Paul Ripperger and Captain Rachel Jannace Johnson of the Tide Hustle in Greenport reports consistent porgy fishing with catches depending on the dexterity of the angler as the sharpies have no problem limiting out while the less experienced angler may only put a handful of scup in the bucket. Most of the scup are of good size with plenty of jumbos making up the bulk of the catch. Everyday sees a mix of striped bass, black sea bass, fluke, bluefish and weakfish mixed in. On Sunday, the boat came back early because the entire boat limited out on big porgies. On Thursday, the boat sailed its first striped bass/porgy combo trip which was a huge success as 41 bass including 7 slot size fish staying on the boat releasing the rest which were oversize. In addition, at the change of tides, the boat switched over to porgies and everyone had their limit of scup to 2 pounds. Since the bass/porgy trip was such a huge success, the boat will be running a rod benders trip every Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. fishing for porgies and striped bass. Reservations are a must for these trips which is limited to only 15 passengers. The Tide Hustle will be sailing from Brick Cove Marina in Greenport every day, weather permitting starting at 7 a.m. and returning back to the dock between 2 and 2:30 p.m. The Tide Hustle is the newest addition of the East End open boat operation that is owned and operated by both Capt. Rachel and her husband Todd Johnson. Open boat trips are limited to 15 anglers with a 100 feet of rail space to roam in. Although walk ons are welcome, a reservation is strongly suggested to guarantee your spot on the rail. The Tide Hustle is also available for charters, also limited to 15 passengers. For further information or to book your spot on the rail you can give Capt. Paul a call at (631) 522-2002 or Captain Rachel a call at (631) 384-6294.
