Fluke Season Opens This Saturday & Bluefish Invade the South Shore
The big news coming this week is the opener for the ’24 fluke season. Remember, new regulations are in effect. Those going out in search of some early-season flatties should be well aware of them. Porgy season also opened earlier this week, with reports of them being caught already. Bluefish have been making their presence known on the South Shore of the island, harassing bunker schools throughout the bays. Stripers have been on both shores and have made their way to Montauk as well. For those who were curious, the last days of the tog season were productive for those who tried for them with catches into the double digits. As a last reminder, recreational tuna fish for giant bluefin (73 inches or larger) also closes until the end of the year with the reaching of the subquota.
Striped bass fishing remains the main attraction and rightfully so as the Western Sound has been on fire with plenty of slot fish along with hordes of under and over size fish. Bunker chunking has been red hot at night, while trolling Mojo’s, parachutes and tubes, or jigging clutter spoons produce best during the day. Reports of porgies and scup are coming from the Peconic’s which bodes well for Wednesday porgy debut. Spotty reports of a few fluke from the Sand City area has trickled in but we can only hope for a solid start this coming Saturday, May 4th. Will someone please tell the weatherman spring is here.
