Mike at Fishing East Coast Bait and Tackle in Little Neck reports striped bass fishing is still good at night inside Manhasset Bay on live eels. Porgy fishing has picked up nicely on the grounds as well as to the east inside Oyster Bay on worms, clams and porgy jigs. Fluke fishing is action packed with mainly shorts and an occasional keeper in the mix. Spearing and squid combos are indeed working well along with Berkley Gulp. Bluefishing remains a mystery with a few blues taken some days while the other days draw a big blank. Snappers are at all the marinas and docks.

Capt. Pat Barrett of the Shamrock Charterboat in New Rochelle reports very good porgy fishing this week on his charter and evening trips. Some weakfish and jumbo sea bass are also hitting the fillet table. The evening Sunset trips have now changed to Sunset Porgy trips due to the lack of flatties. The Sunset Porgy trips will continue to sail every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday through Labor Day Weekend chasing porgies. After that Capt. Pat will decide if the curtains come down on the Sunset trips or if it will be extended. Nuno DeCosta Tyalure Professional Tackle & Gear in Rye, NY reports striped bass are sucking down live bait inside the East River this week with an occasional bluefish to make things interesting. Porgy fishing has been good in the Rye area as well as to the east by Oyster Bay with both worms and clams producing well. On the offshore scene, tuna fishing continues to be excellent at the Atlantis and southeast of Block Island. Aboard the open boat the Rip Tide III in City Island Capt. Carl reports a very good week of porgy fishing with plenty of double headers and limits around the rails. Worms and clams are getting the job done. Along with the porgies are keeper sea bass, a few weakfish, some fluke and a few bluefish. The boat sails daily weather permitting at 8 a.m.

Blaise from Duffy’s Bait and Tackle in Glenwood Landing reports all the beaches are producing good porgy fishing as well as inside the harbor and in the Sound. Buoy 28 C and Oyster Bay are producing very good scup fishing on worms and clams. The nighttime striped bass bite has been fair to good inside Hempstead Harbor and inside Manhasset Bay with live eels doing the trick. Fluke continues to be taken at Matinecock Point on bucktails tipped with squid and spearing. Snapper fishing has been very good at all the docks.

On Cold Spring Charters in Cold Spring Harbor, Capt. Herb Hahn reports good porgy fishing with stripers being included when conditions permit. Capt. The guys at Campsite Sport Shop in Huntington report that the striped bass fishing has slowed quite a bit although there are some fish at the Triangle before sunrise with tossing poppers, trolling Mojo’s or using live porgies all producing slot size stripers. Fluke fishing has slacked off inside the bay with some larger fluke sitting in 50 to 75 feet of water along the rocky bottoms. Use bucktails dressed with Gulp or high/low rigs tipped with Gulp. Not much on the bluefish to speak of, however the kids are having a ball with snappers at the docks.

Rob at Hi-Hook Bait and Tackle in Huntington reports fishing is improving with porgies coming from the boats and beaches. Boatmen be sure to anchor and chum to keep the scup close to the boat. Worms and clams on basic porgy rigs will do the trick from both the beaches and boats. Huntington Bay has scup as does Target Rock from both the beach and boats in 20 to 50 feet of water. The scup are also at the Brush Pile and buoy 11 B. Black sea bass fishing is steadily improving at the Green Ledge and Anchors Reef with clams and diamond jigs, both being effective. If you can get on the water and by Eaton’s Neck before sunrise, then there is a good chance connecting with some stripers when employing live bait. You crank the odds in your favor if sunrise coincides with the first hour of the ebb tide. Snapper fishing has been good at all the local docks, particularly during the early morning hours.

Mark DeJong of the Celtic Quest Fleet in Port Jefferson reports porgy fishing remains second to none. As long as there is a moving tide, Port Jeff is really Porgy Town USA. Catches range from a steady pick to lock and load. The Celtic Quest Fleet will continue to sail 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. until Labor Day Weekend. Justin Braun of Port Tackle in Port Jefferson reports excellent porgy fishing since the Celtic Quest and the Osprey have been really bailing the fish on all their trips this week. Worms and clams are the tickets. There have been a good showing of black sea bass at the deeper haunts with diamond jigs or high/low rigs baited with clam and squid producing a few quality fish. Striped bass can still be found slamming live spot and live eels but the action is slower than it’s been. The offshore scene in the big blue sea is seeing the great yellowfin and big eye tuna bite continuing at the Atlantis, while the bluefin can be found 10 to 30 miles southeast of Shinnecock. Port Tackle carries all your bait and tackle needs including different flats of bait and different cans of chum to fit the current offshore tuna status.

Jim Flora of Miller Place Bait and Tackle reports excellent porgy fishing just about anywhere there are rockpiles or strewn bottom, especially in the 20 to 50 foot depths. Anchoring and chumming with clam logs and worms and clams for the hooks has been best. There are still some striped bass around sucking down live eels during the evening and early morning hours anywhere from buoy 11 to buoy 9. Bluefishing is improving and should peak by mid-September. The choppers are usually willing to hit anything tossed or dropped down to them. Snappers are inside the harbors hitting spearing, jigs and snapper poppers.

Capt. Brian of Captain Skippy Charters in Mount Sinai reports a great week of fishing providing you stay away from the influx of seals that found their way to mid-Sound. Striped bass are still consistent with fish to 45 inches finding their way on board this week. Live bait, trolling or tossing plugs on light spinning outfits are all effective. Skippy Charters continues to collaborate with Gray Fish Tag which gives anglers the opportunity to tag, name and release oversize stripers in the name of science. This week’s shout out goes to 8 year old Tiera and her sisters who caught and tagged and released a 45-inch striper they named “Feisty Marshmallow”. Porgy fishing remains spectacular along the deeper drops with large black sea bass in the mix. Bluefishing has been tough as of late and fluke are on the shoals but keepers are out of the picture for the most part. Capt. The crew from Ralphs Fishing Station in Mt. Sinai reports excellent porgy fishing off Cedar Beach, Old Field Point and the Middle Grounds. Worms, clams and porgy jigs are all producing scup along with decent sea bass fishing, particularly at the Middle Grounds. Striped bass fishing has slowed considerably, although there have been some good scores at buoy nine on the night tides on live eels. Fluke remains a pick at the shoals on bucktails and traditional rigs baited with spearing and squid combo. Not many keepers around but the action remains good. The snapper fishing has been good inside the harbor and at the Cedar Beach pier.

Phil of Cow Harbor Bait and Tackle in Northport reports good porgy fishing from the beaches and on the boats with worms and clams doing the trick wherever there are porgies while anchoring and chumming sets it up perfectly for boatmen. A few sea bass are also mixing in with the scup. The porgies are anywhere from in front of the Coast Guard Station to the Brush Pile and buoy 11 B. Striped bass can still be had very early in the morning before sunrise with live spot producing best. The stripers are at buoy 15 and the Obstruction Buoy. There are still a few big fluke around along the deeper ledges with fresh caught dogfish belly or fluke ribbons nailing the bigger fluke. Bluefish, strangely with so much bait in the water, are absent from the scene most days. Snappers on the other hand are at the docks.

Stu of Northport Charters Northport reports that porgies and sea bass make up the bulk of the catch and continues to improve as water temperatures begin to slowly drop with cooler nights and early morning air temperatures. The kids camp and regular charters are enjoying good action with the scup. In addition, this week, the kids enjoyed and were excited to catch eight kingfish while porgy fishing. Captain Stu said the amount of spearing, peanut bunker and butterfish that is in the bays and the Sound is incredible which bodes well for the upcoming fall season for the next round of striped bass. Craig from WeGo Bait and Tackle in Southold reports the bay is like an aquarium with porgies, kingfish, weakfish, snapper blues, sea bass, fluke and sand sharks all resorting from Noyack Bay to Nassau Point. High/low rigs baited with worms, clams and squid all producing plenty of panfish action. Anchoring and chumming makes all the difference with the action. Further east in big ole Gardiners Bay, there are larger porgies, black sea bass, bluefish and fluke just waiting to slam high/low rigs also baited with worms, clams and squid, while the bluefish are crushing any metal jig. Further to the east from Plum Island to the Race, bluefishing really picked up this week with some good shots of striped bass inside the Sluiceway and at the Race. Bucktails and squirts on 3x3 rigs working uphill are producing mainly slot size bass. The striped bass fishing has been sporadic, however when it’s good, it’s real good. The Long Island and Block Island Sound are seeing excellent sea bass and porgy action with a few green bonito and Spanish mackerel slamming jigs intended for bluefish. Tuna fishing remains fabulous at the 30 Fathom Line and at the Atlantis. Bluefin are closer to shore while the latter location plays host to yellowfin and big eye tuna.

Capt. Paul Ripperger and Captain Rachel Jannace Johnson of the Tide Hustle in Greenport reports an excellent week on the fishing grounds with porgies, black sea bass, weakfish and fluke all coming aboard leaving big smiles and big bags of fillets for all the patrons. The Tide Hustle is sailing from Brick Cove Marina in Greenport every day, weather permitting starting at 7 a.m. and returning back to the dock between 2 and 2:30 p.m. unless they are on an extended trip which returns at 4 p.m. The Tide Hustle is the newest addition of the East End open boat operation and is owned and operated by both Capt. Rachel and her husband Todd Johnson. Open boat trips are limited to 15 anglers with a 100 feet of rail space to roam in. Although walk Ons are welcome when the boat is not filled, a reservation is strongly suggested to guarantee your spot on the rail. Adam at North Country Gas Bait and Tackle in St. James reports Joanne Fowler used live bait to nail stripers to 40 inches outside Northport Harbor. Adam Wilson himself found that fresh long strips of squid did the trick as Adam nailed a limit of fluke to 23-inches fishing at Sand City this week.
