Long Island, Metro Video Fishing Forecast May 14, 2026

This week’s forecast also takes a moment to honor several respected names recently lost within the fishing community, including Captain Al Lorenzetti, Stu Miller, and Pelagic Outfitters owner Christopher Ramos. Plus, we’ve got fresh catches from the surf, bays, party boats and backwaters, along with a look at the Regulator Open House at Suffolk Marine and more regional fishing events heading into the heart of the spring run.

Tony Salerno-North Shore Highlights
May 18, 2026 - 09:59:13
Striped bass remains on the main stage along the Western Sound. All the bait shops and charter skippers I spoke to all report excellent striped bass on all the usual natural and artificial tactics. Unfortunately, as you move east beyond Huntington Bay, the bass bite remains quite picky. The problem remains that the water temperatures are still cold, which is unusual, despite what the calendar says. Experience tells me that once the waters warm a bit more, the bonanza of striped bass, bluefish, fluke and porgies will occur at the same time. You may want to add black sea bass to the list as well since the season is now open on the indigo beauties. As for fluke, the bite remains spotty although Capt. Stu Paterson of Northport Charters did enjoy a good catch of keepers to 5 pounds on Friday while fishing Northport Bay. In from Mike Caruso, The Fisherman’s Publisher, we heard he has been banging away on stripers this past week. Fishing just outside of Port Jefferson along the drop offs, Mike said the bass are on the move, with fish taking 8 to 10-inch paddle tails at the bottom or top of the tide. Using the Hummingbird sonar, Mike was able to find the fish stacked up like logs, making for an easy target. If you are not yet a subscriber to the Fisherman Magazine I strongly suggest subscribing because for a bit of pocket change that is less than one cup of coffee from Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts each week, your yearly subscription to the Fisherman Magazine gives you a chance to win a 2026 23-foot Steiger Craft Chatham center console during the 2026 Dream Boat Challenge.

Any tactic employed has been effective; however, trolling Mojo’s or any bunker spoon have had a strong edge over all else. Fluke fishing has improved dramatically with most boats seeing two to four keepers out of 20 fish. Most of the action is inside Hempstead Harbor with bucktails dressed with squid and spearing combo being the ticket to success. Porgies are still slow although reports prove that Oyster Bay is seeing some decent fishing with scup to 3 pounds.

Capt. Brian of Captain Skippy Charters in Mount Sinai reports striped bass fishing is picking up in the central Long Island Sound. After a slow start from the cold winter, water temps are finally over the 50 degree mark and more and more fish are moving in every day with bass over 15 pounds by trolling, jigging and with bait. If it’s anything like the last few seasons, things are setting up to be an epic spring bass run. Capt. Skippy Charters will once again be collaborating with Gray Fish Tag, giving anglers the unique opportunity to catch, tag, name, and release over-slot striped bass all in the name of science. Following suit, it’s been a slow start on the fluke and porgy front, but things are picking up. As water temperatures continue to rise there should also be great fluke action feeding on sand eels on the shoals, along with drop and stick LI Sound porgy fishing May-June. After such a brutal winter, there’s no better time than now to get your family back out on the water. Call (631) 252-6535 to book a trip.
