Cobia Moving In + Bay Fluke to 12 Pounds
Last week was the first week we got a string of cobia reports on the west end of the island. The biggest fish going at about 65 pounds from the ocean bunker pods! Fluking was hot again in the South Shore bays with fish to 12 pounds reported, along with a series of other impressive catches. Bassing has become just an east end thing as of recent with most of the fish being caught near Block and Fishers Islands. Sea Bass was a good bet in Montauk on the grounds south of the point as well with some over 5 pounds. On the offshore side, yellowfins were running the Canyon again and some good tilefish reports also came in from the deeper waters, too.
While the bass got up and moved for the most part, fluking on the southern grounds saw some better results during the last week. Sea bass and porgies added to the fun. Anyone searching for some serious striper action should consider fishing east of Montauk, closer to Block Island. Some giants were also caught south of Block and yellowfin were landed in the Canyons.

From the Ebb Tide they let me know of another sea bass dominate day on the water over the weekend as the prior half day had a very lethargic fluke bite. Shorts seemed to be the only thing hungry other than jumbo sea bass. They were chartered by Fred Smith Plumbing in the afternoon/evening and had a Block Island bottom bonanza. Nonstop action between fluke seabass and scup. They easily had the boat limit of sea bass. The porgy brothers had limits on scup and sea bass and took the biscuit pool. Tony limited on fluke quietly all alone fishing under the boat all day. He also had his sea bass. Marty Dowd was shut out until Lauren showed him how to work a bucktail in the shallow Block Island grounds.

Captain Keith from the Fin Chaser reported that the week started with the absolutely best way to enjoy a Monday morning; 1) come to Montauk, 2) get on the boat and 3) catch some fish. The awesome anglers made easy work of decking their limit of porgies. Then they shifted gears and with some patience combined with effort made limits on sea bass. Louis Corwise’s jumbo sea biscuit fattened his wallet with the pool money. It was a day of chasing fins and filling bins. Tuesday’s run provided a classic Montauk mixed bag of porgy limits and some nice sea bass. Eduardo Rosa grabbed the lunch money with his jumbo sea biscuit. On Wednesday, the fares had two reasons to celebrate. It was mate Caroline’s birthday and a super productive day on the grounds. Variety was the name of the game as the anglers collected limits on scup, some beautiful large sea bass and a few summer flatties to complete the trifecta. The next day on the porgy front the awesome anglers enjoyed steady catching all morning, but when they fished the magic tide it was deluxe models and double headers all around. The humpback scup dominated the domain like dot.com super hackers. As for the sea biscuits, the bottom was inundated with sub compact models and only had a few keepers. Larry Smith drained the pool. Action was outstanding on Friday as the cadence was drop it-lock it-reel ‘em in. It was porgies gone wild as the fares slam dunked a limit by 7 a.m. Then everyone kicked it into twin turbo overdrive and decked jumbo sea bass and fluke to 5 pounds. Special mention goes to boat regular Uncle Danne, who was the first to make his limit on porgies as well as sea bass. Michael Smith filled his cooler with fish and his wallet with the pool proceeds. A FINomenal day of tote filling took place on Saturday. The awesome anglers were locked and loaded and prepared to do battle. After filling the pails with limits of sweet scup, they dialed in on and loaded up with limits on jumbo sea bass including some that were Mega Super Deluxe drag pullers. Sunday closed out an awesome weekend superb catching for the awesome anglers aboard who started the day making limits of genuine Montauk Point lighthouse porgies and then headed east to Block Island and with some maneuvering they made limits on jumbo sea bass. Thirteen-year-old Kendall Powell took the lunch money for the two-day boat pool with his 3.92-pound jumbo sea biscuit, which also crowed him the winner for the Party Boat Angler Division of the Montauk Mercury Grand Slam Tournament! Way to go Kendall! To reserve or find out more information visit www.myfinchaser.com or call (516) 643-0940.

Over at Marlena's Yacht Club they let me know black sea bass fishing picked up in the last week over near Frisbees, south of the point along with ling and bigger porgies. Bigger fluke came in from the Frisbees grounds as well. Bluefin tuna were reported around the point as well. The stripers moved to the eastern grounds, near Block Island.

Captain Sal from the Moondance in Montauk reported that Louisa gave the gift of shark to her nephews Jack and Matt. They came out and bagged a small mako and a 250-pound brown shark. The brown shark was tough to get to the boat. Both fish were released unharmed. Donald from Monroe came out with Desiree and wanted a big striper and they found a few at Block. They were very happy. Nick and crew came out and the star of the show was 9-year-old Henry. He had at first didn’t want to come out of the cabin, but Mate Danny coaxed him to come on out and fish and he was hooked. He counted 42 fish that he caught himself. At first, they had to help him, but then he was on his own and really it was great to see a young kid like that so fascinated and involved with fishing. CJ and sons came out with Paul and niece Meaghan.

Jill from the November Rain said “It’s been another busy week, kicked off with the Jamie McGarvey crew. The guys wanted nothing but big striped bass and that’s what they caught all day. We released most of the fish, with a few in the 40-pound class, including one that was halved by a shark on the way up. First timer Jim Romano also sailed with us early in the week for a bass/bottom trip. We had a few oversized fish to start followed by a nice catch of sea bass. Ed Anderson returned for his annual trip and we repeated the bass/bottom routine. The striped bass were less cooperative, and we landed a few slobs before putting two dozen sea bass in the box. Bill Germanakos came all the way from Keystone Yacht Club for a trip mid-week. The guys fought a few overs to start the trip before turning to the sea bass for a decent bite. Megan’s gang also came out mid-week. We stuck to the bottom fishing for this group and easily put a nice catch together. Thursday saw another bottom fishing trip with the Eric Perry crew. The guys had a banner day, loading the boat with a limit of sea bass and more than a couple bushels of scup. We steamed offshore on Friday with Mike Matthews and the boys. Incredible bite, going 6 for 7 bluefin and putting 3 on ice. Saturday morning saw Andrea Sauro and her family for their annual trip. The striped bass were being finicky so we stuck to the bottom fishing and sent the crew home with their limit of sea bass. We had a repeat of the bottom fishing for Robert and Bobby McBride on Saturday afternoon, who came out to catch the evening’s dinner. The bass can be temperamental, but there’s still plenty of action to get in on, both inshore and offshore.” Give them a call at (646) 335-7315 to book a trip.

Captain Sean from Tailwrapped Sportfishing reported to me last week's fishing action was been fantastic. Starting off the week they had Mike favola and his family join them for a day of bottom fishing and they slammed the sea bass catching their limit and releasing many more to bite another day. On Wednesday, Alan Swain joined them, bending rods on monster blues sea bass and porgies and we even had Boston mackerel thrown into the mix. On Thursday Joe Caruso joined them for an offshore shore tuna trip and they caught their limit of bluefin tuna as well as four others that they released. On Saturday Tom Goldsbury and his crew jumped in on the hot tuna bite and they went 8/8 bluefin, keeping 3 and releasing the others. Trolling spreader bars and ballyhoo did the trick. Offshore tuna fishing has been great so if you’re looking to bend the rods on some quality fish give them a call. August is filling up fast for tuna but they still have dates available.

From the Viking Fleet of Montauk Capt. Carl reported a very quiet night on the full moon striped bass trip on the Viking Starship. They worked over a lot of local spots – some well-known and some of their secret ones, but did not find anything to work on. It was a beautiful night and they thank our passengers for being patient and understanding. The pool winner was William Marshall from Shelter Island, NY. Capt. JR also reported a decent day of Block Island angling aboard the Viking Starlite. The sea bass fishing was definitely good but the size of the fish required a heavy sort to get to the keepers. However, they definitely had an easy boat limit. Fluke fishing was also slightly off, but at the end of the day they finished up about on par with what they have been catching. The sea bass pool winner went to Ryder Sonday from Shenandoah Junction, WV with a 3.6-pound sea bass. The fluke pool winner went to Aidan Adomaites from Syosset, NY with a 5.2-pound fluke! Give them a call at (631) 668-5700 or reserve your spot at vikingfleet.com.

Down at West Lake Marina they told me it was a great week on the tuna both from the canyons and closer. The CIA grounds had some while the canyons had a few bigeyes and yellowfins. Fluking saw an uptick in the action with fish up to 9 pounds hitting the scales. Some boats went north of the Pocketbook while others slugged it out on the Cartwright and Frisbees grounds. Strip baits and big grubs did the damage. Those who could get through small sea bass were able to get limits on them as well on the fluke grounds. Giant porgies in the local rips added to the catches. Striper have been elusive at the point but rumor has it that the body of fish is closer to Block.

Bryce from White Water Outfitters in Hampton Bays informed me he had 7 giants caught and release south of Block Island. One customer did a number on yellowfins with 12 caught on a popper in the Hudson Canyon and the Dip. Back inshore, the fluke fishing picked up a lot inside the bay with a ton of shorts coming up and enough keepers in the mix to spice up most trips. Most light tackle presentations are getting the job done for fluke fishermen. Gulp, Fishbites and squid/spearing combos are all good choices. The reef is seeing some sea bass and the occasional bigger fluke as well.

He did know of a good weakfish bite earlier in the week around Shelter Island. One customer made a bluefin tuna claim in the Race. Snappers are showing up at the local docks and piers in Peconic Bay.

Liz at Mattituck Fishing Station in Mattituck reports fluking remains excellent although most are shorts with some nice keepers in the mix. The grounds right in front of the Motels are producing both fluke and porgies. Hi/low rigs tipped with squid and spearing catch the fluke while worms and clams catch the scup. Sea bass are out in 85 to 110 feet of water. Diamond jigs tipped with a 3 inch Swimming Mullet in chartreuse catch sea bass to over 5 pounds. Stripers are showing up along all of the beaches at night slamming poppers and bunker chunks.

Craig from WeGo Bait and Tackle in Southold reports summer fishing is in full swing with summer weakfish and porgies in all their usual haunts of Rose Grove, Noyack Bay Jessups Neck and the Middle Grounds off Greenport. Hi/low rigs armed with squid strips, sandworms and clam bellies are getting the job done. Striped bass and bluefish continue to wreak havoc in the Race and Plum Gut. Both moving tides are producing on 3 x 3 rigs fished with 3 ounce bucktails during the daytime while live eels do the trick during the dark hours. Fluke can still be found with some sea bass east of Gardiners Island with stripped down sea robin and fished on a 6 to 8 ounce bucktail catching the keeper fluke. Large to jumbo porgies are chewing real good out in the Long Island and Block Island Sounds. Crabbing has been hot at the docks.
