Both the South Shore bays and Montauk are seeing an improvement in the fluke bite while the sea bass season opener started off well with good catches around the island. Montauk remains hot for stripers once again going into this weekend with more fish over 50 pounds reported. Contributors also check in this week with the best options heading into the holiday. Whether you’re heading out on the water this weekend or watching fireworks at home, enjoy the holiday and stay safe.
East End fishing continues to be fantastic. The addition of the sea bass season make trips even sweeter. Remember the sea bass size limit goes up to 16 inches this season. You can still retain three fish until August 31st and then on September 1st the bag limit becomes six fish. Striper fishing at the point remains spectacular as well on various methods and were starting to see a better fluke bite starting to develop out east.

From the Viking Fleet of Montauk Capt. Dave reported good fishing on the Viking Star for the Friday light house trip. It was excellent fishing at the point to start the day with the conditions just right. They had large and jumbo porgies, some bluefish and striped bass. They went offshore to find the sea bass and they were mostly on the smaller side having to pick through them to find the keepers. There were also some keeper fluke out there. They hit the lighthouse on the way back to the dock, but there was a fast drift so it wasn't as good as the early morning. The pool winner was Robert Moore from Rahway, NJ with a 2-3/4-pound porgy. For Saturdays trip the report was a great day on the Viking Starship. It was excellent fishing at the light house with mostly large and jumbo porgies. There were also striped bass, bluefish and quite a few sea bass. When the tide started to run hard they went down the beach and found an excellent pick of mixed size porgies. The first place pool winner was Clifford Browne from Brooklyn, NY with a 3-pound porgy. The edible pool winner was Cornell Armstrong from Teaneck, NJ with a 4-pound sea bass. Captain Sal from the Moondance in Montauk reported a great week of striper and porgy fishing. The boat did a little trolling, but also lots of live bait fishing. All size fish have coming up. A number of trophy stripers in the 40 to 50 pound range last week hit the deck. The big ones dont even come out of the water, but are release quickly and safely. Most groups last week limited out with a few just taking a few home for the table and releasing everything else. Porgies are big and plentiful. The sea bass bite steady too. Lots of 15 fish and many keepers. The caption also reports fluke still spotty. They didnt do much fluking last week, but reports are getting better, especially in deeper water. For those interested in light tackle fishing, the boat has been doing a bit of that as well. Call the Captain at (917) 601-4548 to book your next charter. More

Jill form the November Rain reported Mean Matty Lynch started the week off with them for his annual bass and bottom fishing trip. The group of eight put away their limit of striped bass, also releasing a few slobs, and then iced up a nice pick of sea bass and fluke. Alex Radetsky made his second trip of the year with them, this time on his own, spending the morning playing catch and release with the striped bass. Randy Abramson took his dad and friends fishing with them during the week and the crew easily caught their limit of bass. Brett and the gang came out mid-week and had a blast with the diamond jigs, keeping five bass for dinner. The Mike Delgrosso trip also fished this week, quickly putting their striped bass in the box and releasing a bunch of others. Thursday saw the Chris Hill crew. The group of 10 had their limit of slots on ice within a couple of hours and spent the rest of day swinging jumbo sea bass over the rail. The Rob Montpetit saw similar action on Friday, keeping their limit of six striped bass and then loading up on sea bass. And last but not least this week was Tom Kowalski. The group of seven spent the trip swinging slot bass over the rail, releasing a few other good-sized fish and a handful of overs. Give them a call at (646) 335-7315 to book a trip. More

A few blues and some scup joined the party too. The Jim Anunziato group also got out with the boat. They had a limit of slots with some stripers over 40 pounds mixed in and some blues in mix too. Captain Keith from the Fin Chaser reported all of his awesome anglers were on the rail putting in hard work during the week achieving limits of both sea bass and porgies. All his trips have been seeing an average pool fish of around 4 pounds which is a nice sea biscuit! Aside from the porgies and sea bass, bycatch for the week included cod, fluke and bluefish. These bonus species put a smile on his customers faces and spiced up the haul by the days end for a mixed bag of tasty fillets. Fishing has been good aboard the Fin Chaser and you dont have to be a professional to catch either. All it takes is some time at the rail waiting for those bites. West End reporter Geoff Lawrence also fished on the boat on Wednesday. He let me know he joined 37 other anglers aboard the Fin Chaser in search of scup and sea bass. All the porgy pullers had a blast as they hauled in medium and large fish that jumped on clam baits. Plenty of sea biscuits joined the show as well. Boat regular Pino Kos had his wallet fattened by a fat sea bass of 3-1/2 pounds which was the pool winner. Another angler actually drilled a 4-pounder but had to learn the lesson that you've got to be in it to win it. Kathy from the Lazy Bones told me they had some pretty good fishing days this week where they caught quite a few fluke, some jumbo porgies and some sea bass. They had Tom Hart win the pool fish with his fish at 3-1/2 pounds. Adam Inglis had the biggest fish this week with a whopping fluke at 8 pounds. Thursday morning had David Leis limit out and also win the pool on his birthday with his fish at 6 pounds. He always puts his time in and tries hard. Christine Coughlin beat out the boys and won the pool with her fish at 5-¼ pounds and Ed Lagrua had a 3-1/2-pounder. Patrick Bacaris landed 3 nice keepers to boot. There was a ton of action and the kids had a fun time pulling in some sand sharks which is always a big hit with our families groups. Call ahead for reservations at (631) 668-5671. More

From the Ebb Tide they let me know on one of their striper trips the night began with a trickle of tide and blues and porgys jumping on the jigs. Once they started moving, they had a few bass on them. It continued to get better as darkness fell upon them so they stayed late and enjoyed some of the best bassing in two drifts. Ray was the pool winner and high hook with seven bass to 40-pounds. Georgi Sloejehnfiz had three to 30 pounds. Gregg had a few to 30 pounds also. Ian had fish to 35 pounds as well. Jeff used a proven technique which worked on porgys and bluefish. Jon from Maryland had his quota. Jake Goldberg and JP also had keepers to boot. For fluke fishing Capt. Jake reported a beautiful day of fishing. They decided to head offshore because the tide was not perfect for bass and they had a few excellent drifts that produced quality fluke. Tony nailed a 6.9-pounder to take the pool. Alex and Albie had three keepers apiece. Lou and Jane had two apiece. They had a mess of sea bass, some baseball bat size ling and the own fillet master Lauren nailed her first Monkfish on a Spro after landing a 4-pound fluke. Another great day of harvesting with many happy customers. Call the boat at (631) 668-2818 or visit ebbtidefishing.com to book your next trip. More

Mike from Star Island Yacht Club let me know he weighted a nice weighted in a 350-pound thresher at the club. Stripers have been chewing like mad on the flood but the ebb is decent too. Kenny from Tight Lines Tackle in Sag Harbor let me Montauk is the place to be. The temperature in the Peconics is above 70 degrees making it tough for fishing. It seems like the weakfish have left buoy 16. Ken said working the humps in the bay might bay off still. Look for the deeper water also. The bluefish are still at Jessup Neck but are smaller. Fluking around Shelter is still ok. Some porgies are still in the bay up to about 1.5 pounds. Ken did hear of good sea bass fishing in Montauk and recommended using jigs for catching bigger fish. He also said the Gut and Race early and later in the day is good for stripers. And of course the Elbow in Montauk still been hot for stripers. More

Scott from East End Bait and Tackle reported the fluke bite in the bay continues to improve. The keeper to short ratio is improving too. Also theyre hearing of more limits than in past years. Scott personally had my limit this week with a 24 inches to make the day. Both eastern and western parts of the bay are producing but as usual wind and tide together are key. The regular baits of squid, spearing and Gulp all working but the spearing seemed to have the edge. The shop also had reports of a few fluke in the ocean out near the cheese house around 60 feet and Mecox in 40 feet. The sea bass are cooperating on the reef but keepers of 16 inches are tough to find. The reef is holding sea bass, porgies, fluke and ling. The striped bass bite has slowed considerably but the bunkers schools off Mecox did not disappoint with fish to 50 pounds on the live bunker. The bass that are present in the bay are taking drifted live baits near the bridge and inlet. Bluefish have thinned out and can be found in the bunker schools. In Peconic Bay the porgy bite remains good in the regular spots including near Jessup Neck and Rogers Rock using clam baits and clam chum. Weakfish are in the deep holes where the water is cooler and are taking jigs and hi-lo rigs tipped with squid. Theyre hearing about some fluke around Shelter Island. Guys that have run to the Gut have done very well with striped bass too. More

Capt. Rich of the Nancy Ann in Orient, reports bass and blues have been excellent limiting out on every trip. Sea bass has been a bit tough due to the new sixteen inch regulation. This new regulation is hurting the open and charter boat businesses. Still, however, most boats are catching a lot of shorts and definitely enough keepers to keep everyone happy. Porgies still continue to fill the box. There are still openings available from August to early October. You can reach Capt. Rich and his wife Nancy at (631) 477-2337. More

Liz at Mattituck Fishing Station in Southold reports porgies and sea bass are definitely your best bet with many quality fish being caught on worms, clams and clatter jigs. The best fishing is from the Firing Range to the Motels. Bass and bluefishing has been good off Hortons Point with bass biting best at dusk and dawn and bluefish throughout the daytime hours. Bunker chunks and eels have been the best baits. Fluke fishing remains slow with some shorts being taken by Buoy 5 with an occasional keeper. Spro bucktails and Berkeley gulp remain the best choice of baits for the flatties. No reports of weakfish this week. More
