Striper Season Opens Monday & Belmont Fishing Festival this Weekend
The long-awaited official opener for the striper season opens this upcoming Monday! The same regulations will remain in effect since the season left off with one fish between 29 to 31 inches. The good news is the bass are already around the island and have been actively chewing in the back bays on worms and artificials. Tog season got off to a tougher start due to some tough weather, but some successful trips inside the bays and out on the ocean reefs proved the fish were in place and starting to feed. Keep in mind that this weekend is the big family spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The lake has been stocked for the event, and while fishing the event, a freshwater fishing license is not needed! It’s a great way to get into the sport.

Scott from East End Bait and Tackle said striped bass season is finally upon us and we are hearing rumors of schoolie sized fish being caught in our surrounding waters. Nothing definitive but if I were to guess, try targeting the back bay areas of the Peconic bay. Water temps are still a bit chilly and should begin to warm quicker as our night time temperatures are beginning to moderate. The weakfish made an early appearance last spring, so I would expect to see the same again this year. The best bet for the coming weeks would be to target the back bay shallower areas where the waters get a chance to warm a bit more under the daytime sun. Soft plastic baits and bucktails fished just off the bottom should work well for the lethargic fish in the cold water. Shop is open seven days, Mon-Sat 8-6 and Sun 8-3. Make sure you get your gear in for service or repairs while the wait is short.

Craig from WeGo Bait and Tackle in Southold reports the shop is open and are carrying all your bait needs as well as tackle. Fish wise, Craig reports bunker and squid continue to spill into the bay, especially towards Flanders Bay which is quite common this time of year. A few small stripers are being taken at the tip of the Peconic River with poppers and deep diving plugs duping the majority of fish. With porgy season debuting in a couple of weeks, interest will be storming with the annual spring run of sea scup along with shots at weakfish.
