While the wind has kicked up the past few days, putting a halt on cod fishing attempts, some decent results came about from the trips right beforehand and the good fishing should carry over when the ocean settles again. Conformation on a state record along with freshwater fishing updates and imminent trout stocking in the near future are also discussed. Still no word on the sea bass regulations for 2023 but they will be coming in due time also. This weekend is also filled with events such as the Babylon Fishing Flea Market and the Edison Saltwater Fishing Expo in New Jersey if you’re willing to travel a little further. Either way, The Fisherman Magazine will have a presence at both. Come on down and say hello to the crew if you decide to attend.
It’s the first day of spring and with that comes some more fishing opportunities in the near future. I’ve gotten some reports of stripers starting to stir in the western portions of the Raritan Bay from the surf and boat for those using small soft plastics. I also got some confirmed reports from last week on small striped bass starting to chew in the East River on certain tides with those same soft plastic finesse lures. Aside from that, some trout stockings will be taking place across a number of Long Island lakes, pond and rivers very soon with thousands of rainbow and brown trout. The rainbows tend to be a little smaller but a number of the browns are larger 2-year olds that put up an excellent fight on lighter tackle setups. This weekend we also have another event which is the annual Long Island Fly Fishing Show on Saturday at the Radisson Hotel on Motor Parkway from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
