Fluke Season Opens This Saturday & Bluefish Invade the South Shore
The big news coming this week is the opener for the ’24 fluke season. Remember, new regulations are in effect. Those going out in search of some early-season flatties should be well aware of them. Porgy season also opened earlier this week, with reports of them being caught already. Bluefish have been making their presence known on the South Shore of the island, harassing bunker schools throughout the bays. Stripers have been on both shores and have made their way to Montauk as well. For those who were curious, the last days of the tog season were productive for those who tried for them with catches into the double digits. As a last reminder, recreational tuna fish for giant bluefin (73 inches or larger) also closes until the end of the year with the reaching of the subquota.
While striper fishing has been off to a slow start for the east end boats, the surf scene has been productive on the Hampton sand beaches right to the point. Colder ocean temperatures have kept the action down overall but with another warmer week, that should all change. Some decent cod reports and local tog reports from the north side of the point also made their way in.

Chris from the Montauk Anglers Club reported this week proved to be one of the greatest early seasons Montauk seen in a very long time. With cod plentiful, and blackfish galore it was a bottom fisherman’s dream come true. Montauk Anglers Club had green crabs, anglers that loaded up caught cod and blackfish on them. In the surf, some of the most prolific striped bass fishing was had from the lighthouse to ditch Plains. Slot-sized and overshot fish patrolled the trough eating a variety of lures from bucktails to bass assassins. Montauk Anglers Club has everything you need to hit the surf and catch yourself a striped bass.

From the Viking Fleet of Montauk Capt Steven Jr reported an excellent trip to the north last weekend on their Gulf of Maine trip on the Viking Starship. By the end of the trip everyone except a couple of guys had their two day limit haddock and a good amount of cusk and red fish mixed in. The first day had steady action, but they had a lot of short fish to cull through to get to our keepers. The second day started off hot and slowly diminished to a pick as the day went on. They also had about a dozen wolf fish and a few cod that were safely released. This was their only scheduled trip on the big boat up that way, but they have a few scheduled Gulf of Maine trips on the Viking Fivestar in May that have space on them. As far as other offshore trips coming up they will be getting into their tilefish season and there are some openings on the trips in May. You can view all trips at vikingfleet.com and book online or give the office a call 631-668-5700 for bookings and availability.

Down at West Lake Marina Dave told me “a number of good catches came to the dock with spring blackfish.” Nothing on bass in the rips yet but the surf fishing from Georgica to Ditch Plains have had a nice run of schoolie stripers being caught on smaller bucktails and shads. They suspect that any one of these weeks the bass will make an appearance in the rips right off the point. Dave also noted that the water still needs to warm up a bit.

Scott from East End Bait and Tackle told me “most reports are coming from our local ocean beaches both east and west of the Shinnecock Inlet. Striped bass are being taken on the night tides and taking swimming plugs. Slot-sized fish are in the mix but nothing big. Hearing reports of the yellow eyed bluefish demons are to our west a bit and should probably be here within a few days. We are stocked and ready for the opening of both porgy and fluke seasons this week so be sure to stop in before your next trip.”
